  6. QuickQWERTY 1.2.2 is now available! This release comes with two changes.

First, it fixes a rather annoying bug that caused the 'Restart' link to send the learner all the way back to Unit 1. This has been fixed to restart the current lesson.

Source code management has moved to Codeberg. Links and documentation have been updated accordingly.

  9. About 6 months ago, I started #typing #qwerty with the fingers in the proper positions rather than the left hand shifted one over (#WASD) or crossing rows.

I felt stuck at ~70-80% for quite some time but I noticed that I'm very quick at typing in natural languages again just now; as quick as I remember being before or perhaps even better.

Though I did also change my layout to #neoqwerty (qwerty but with neo layers) at the same time and started using layer-activated #HomeRowMods after #MRMCD25.

  11. Zinwa Q27 prototype brings classic BlackBerry style to a modern Android phone

The Zinwa Q27 is an upcoming smartphone that’s designed to look like a classic BlackBerry device, complete with a QWERTY keyboard. Made by a small team that got its start by replacing the insides of actual BlackBerry phones, the Q27 is Zinwa’s first phone featuring entirely brand new components: It has an AMOLED display, MediaTek Dimensity 7300 processor, and Android 16 software.

    While the […]

  14. Zinwa Q27 will be a modern BlackBerry Clone with a 3.92 inch display, QWERTY keyboard and Android 16 software

The Zinwa Q27 is an upcoming smartphone that combines modern features like an AMOLED display, MediaTek Dimensity 7300 processor, and Android 16 software with a retro design: it has a 3.92 inch display and a physical QWERTY keyboard.

  15. When I learnt to touch type, on Linux/Unix over 30 years ago, I chose Dvorak.
Great system, and I am fast, BUT the lack of modern Dvorak keyboards is a nuisance. I switch the keys around, and have to improvise the ‘homekey bumps’.
Cannot be bothered switching to QWERTY. I can look-two-finger type QWERTY at around 80wpm, but the touch-typing muscle memory is too ingrained now.
Editing is a pain if I have to work on a QWERTY system. If I wasn’t such a geek back then, things might have been different now… 😂
Still, you have to be true to your self. 👾🎒🖲️⌨️

  16. I live in America and am on Mint Mobile. I am totally blind and use an external keyboard. I own a Galaxy A15, and while it works well, it's simply too large and wide for my needs, especially when I need to hold it to use Seeing AI (for scanning printed materials). My specifications shouldn't be too difficult to find, and yet, they are.

Android 14 or 15. Technically, I can go as low as 12, but I would really rather not.
    Upgradable if possible.
Comes with Talkback pre-installed (or able to have someone install it). I have also heard of MicroG, an alternative to Google services that allows such apps to be installed, so that could work as well.
No larger than the iPhone SE 2022, unless by a tiny amount. Smaller is fine.
    Headphone jack.

I am considering the Jelly Max, the Fonepia Q10, and the Minimal Phone. Has anyone here tried any of these in the United States? I don't think the Max has a headphone jack, but as much as I want one, I would be willing to sacrifice it if necessary. I know almost nothing about the Q10. The Minimal contains a real qwerty keyboard, so I wouldn't need to carry one. I don't care what they do with the screen, since I can't see it.

Am I missing any other good phones? I would like to keep this undder $350 at the most, preferably under $300 (Minimal might cost more, but could be worth it).

  19. Dear folks, I've decided to give up.
I've switched my to in mid October (see marcoxbresciani.codeberg.page/ ) but I've never been a touch-typer and it's very difficult to find even 20 minutes per day for training (see keybr.com/profile/f5vmplt ).
While working I'm slowing down everyone, waiting for me typing and doing bunch of errors.
I don't think I'll continue: I'm updating my layers to go back to .
20+ years of QWERTY are hard to change.

  21. I just realized that I've had my @xdadevelopers account for almost 18 years!

I originally registered an account on #XDADevelopers because it was the go-to forum for #hacking & #modding 1st gen #smartphones like the #HTCBlueAngel (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTC_Blue) and #HTCWizard (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTC_Wiza), which were my 1st and 2nd smartphones respectively, back in the early-mid #noughties.

They ran #WindowsMobile, and they featured a slide-out #QWERTY keyboard for relatively fast and precise thumb-typing, a #ResistiveTouchscreen w/ built-in #stylus for taking handwritten notes and drawing pictures, and a rear-facing camera for shooting digital photos on the go. They even came with a mobile version of the #MicrosoftOffice suite, and you could synchronize your documents, spreadsheets, calendar, and contacts with your laptop or desktop by simply dropping the phone into its #USB cradle.

This was all several years before #iPhone and #Android came along. Dang, now I feel even older than usual. 😅

  22. Since mid October 2023, noticing I was starting to have more and more #wristPain, which were lasting days instead of hours... I opted to give those fancy #ergonomic #splitKeyboards a chance, and after several research hours, I opted for the #ZSA #Moonlander, there were alternatives, but too far from what I was used to, was unsure and this was my final choice. (also found a good local used deal)

Since I was changing keyboard, why not use also a more ergonomic layout? So, I opted for a #shockTherapy and went with #Dvorak and used this combination ever since! My first days were quite.... a going back to when I was 7 years old, sub 10 wpm XD but after a couple of weeks, typing was not as humiliating as before and my speeds increased :)

From time to time, I recorded my progress on #Monkeytype and these at the bottom are 4 months of data, from a classical full size #qwerty at 110ish wpm to currently 60ish, with a constant increase week after week. I am not in a hurry, as my wrist pain vanished, and that was the final goal.. So I'm okay with half the speed and -95%ish pains :)

Hope this might prove useful to someone that is also considering this #journey or have this kind of #pain ^^

  23. I'm casually exploring alternatives to QWERTY keyboards on my smartphone.

Some keyboard apps seem to want payment before I get to try. Others want permission to use personal data unrelated to typing.

The #MessagEase keyboard with only 9 buttons is intriguing, but I'd want to try before I pay.

The #Microsoft keyboard app wants to collect Location #data. How would that improve the app's typing performance?

    My keyboarding exploration continues.

  27. The #LaunchHeavy can do 4 layouts. I think the #Kinesis can only do 3. But, I basically only use #dvorak and #qwerty, so no problem there.

Don't like: Launch cannot configure Shift+key, nor any other multi-key combos. Kinesis can. Kinesis also uses text files; Launch uses the GUI configuration software. To set up #dvorak layout, I had to point and click like 60+ times.

(And, why doesn't it come with a pre-configured dvorak choice?)

  28. @lunartech Highly recommend If you are a typist you could use this as an opportunity to learn as the QD version I mentioned has both. Also, consider getting the foot pedal with it :-) (single pedal advantage version only $39)

  29. Most of what I do on my computer is #typing. Whether that's #writing this, chatting, taking notes, or prose.

One of the most powerful ways to increase the /pleasure/ of using electronics is to become adept at typing.

Therefore, here's a list of resources for understanding typing, improving your speed, or even completely changing the layout you can use to spend less time typing, and more time thinking.

    1. Monkeytype - a great typing training website, includes multiple lists of words (start with English/English200 - it's the 200 most common words in English), options for different tests, punctuation, capitalization, etc. etc.

    monkeytype.com

    2. Keybr - this one is different. It's a progressive training website that starts with the home row (for multiple common layouts), and adds keys once you hit about 40WPM with them.

It automatically generates words using common bigrams and trigrams, leading do a very well-rounded word list for training.

If you're learning a new layout, Keybr is indispensible for the first few hours of training.

    www.keybr.com

    3. https://bit.ly/keyboard-layouts-doc

This is a document that goes into detail into the various layouts, the mechanics of typing, what to look for in a layout, how to type efficiently, and why QWERTY is bad (it really is).

    Well-worth the read.

    4. DreymaR's Big Bag of Kbd Tricks (https://dreymar.colemak.org/)

DreymaR went to great lengths to make Colemak-DH accessible to everyone, and with that, he developed a number of extensions.

If you choose to learn #colemak, his website is great. If you choose to go with something else, DreymaR's ExtEnd layer will still save you effort:
    https://dreymar.colemak.org/layers-extend.html

The idea is to have a layer that includes the common nav keys, so you hold the modifier button for instance, and have your arrow keys right on your home row. It's a huge time saver, and I personally don't think I can go back to moving my hand to the arrows all the time.

    5. OXEY's Playground: https://o-x-e-y.github.io/layouts/playground/

An amazing project. The website lets you drag and drop keys to change the layout so see exactly how the relevant statistics go up and down.

This way you can evaluate alternative keyboard layouts and check if your desired changes make sense.

If you're experimenting with improving the layout you're using for yourself, that's the place to start, imo.

Those are really great resources, I think, and learning to type faster than the average of 40 WPM is kinda... necessary, if you work with computers at all.
