  1. Long before WASD, there was IJKL in Lode Runner (plus UO for digging left and right).

I also remember Ultima using the [;'/ keys, or even the Return, /, and left and right arrow keys on the Apple ][.

It’s interesting how movement keys used to be right-hand activities until the mouse became popular as a pointing device; then it turned into a left-handed activity. Even in games that aren’t first-person shooters, WASD remains the default movement keys.

    PL;' never had a chance!

  2. I have been using the DVORAK keyboard instead of the QWERTY keyboard on my phone for 3 years.

    I love it. It's great & efficient.

You won't feel strain on your thumbs while typing long texts, as it doesn't require the thumbs to move very much.

And Yes! It requires patience & a learning curve to get accustomed to.

  4. BlackBerry Bold 9000
    (2008)

The ultimate status symbol for Wall Street executives and celebrities. This premium business smartphone raised the brand's prestige to its absolute peak. It perfectly combined top-tier corporate security with high-end luxury design.

Specs: 624MHz CPU, 128MB RAM, 1GB storage, microSD slot, 2.6" crisp display (480x320), iconic trackball navigation, Wi-Fi, GPS, 2MP camera, and a stellar 1500 mAh battery.

It featured a genuine leather back cover and a premium chrome frame. Its sculpted physical QWERTY keyboard is still considered one of the best ever made for typing. Combined with push email and BBM, it was an elite machine.

  5. yeey, finally got myself XDA keycaps! "3" is a bit blurry and some prints are off-centered, but I'm fine with it (after all, those are sub-dyed, not double shot). and there's bunch of extra keys which's awesooome. having 5 shifts is so funny to me for some reason.
note: I still have hhkb imitation remaps, but I decided to fill (almost) all switches with a cap, so that it looks a bit more normal, but I still play around with those extra keys. :ablobcatbongokeyboard:

also read The primitive tortureboard. I was already aware of these myths, but I didn’t know the story behind the Dvorak layout. doubt I'll change my layout though, despite the temptation. I just don't want to get lost on a computer if I'm not in my "perfectly crafter rice with most optimised layout and everything"™
on the other hand, I don't get on someone else's computer that often...

  6. 158 years ago today, on June 23, 1868, Christopher Latham Sholes filed a patent. ⌨️ His invention: the first typewriter with a QWERTY keyboard. A lot has changed since then. What hasn’t changed: You want to type – and that’s it! No more fiddling around, fixing things, or even having to call in an ops team... that’s why we built Deploio. You bring the code, we’ll take care of the rest. 👉 nine.ch/en/products/deploio/ #typewriterday #qwerty #deploio #paas #techhistory #appengine #nine

  8. for all you aficionados out there: or Mod-DH?

Situation: my 10yo kid will begin mid-school in September and wants my (see picture) for his own computer (that I still have to buy!).
ErgoDash is currently configured with a QWERTY layout, customized with Italian accented letters as per picture.
Should I reconfigure it to Colemak Mod-DH, instead, before giving him the keeb?

  9. QuickQWERTY 1.2.2 is now available! This release comes with two changes.

First, it fixes a rather annoying bug that caused the 'Restart' link to send the learner all the way back to Unit 1. This has been fixed to restart the current lesson.

Source code management has moved to Codeberg. Links and documentation have been updated accordingly.

  11. On a #qwerty keyboard, #GreatCrestedGrebes is one of the longest phrases that can be typed using only the left hand.

Grebes are among the oldest of all #birds; #fossils from 80 million years ago have been discovered.

They tend to be clumsy on land because their legs are so far back on their body, but they are great at diving - up to 17' - and pursuing prey underwater for up to thirty seconds at a time. They eat a lot of their own #feathers, possibly to protect against sharp fish bones.

  12. "Das demonstriert Arthur am Beispiel der QWERTY-Tastatur. Im

  13. QWERTY Phones Are Really Trying to Make a Comeback This Year

    image via gizmodo.com

After dying a painful death at the hand of the iPhone’s revolutionary capacitive touchscreen, the QWERTY smartphone is rising up from the graveyard this year. Either way, two QWERTY phone announcements in this still very new year suggest there may be some kind of trend. Maybe after 19 years of the iPhone and touchscreens defining the mobile experience, it’s time to go back to the physical keyboard and its more tactile typing.

  15. About 6 months ago, I started #typing #qwerty with the fingers in the proper positions rather than the left hand shifted one over (#WASD) or crossing rows.

I felt stuck at ~70-80% for quite some time but I noticed that I'm very quick at typing in natural languages again just now; as quick as I remember being before or perhaps even better.

Though I did also change my layout to #neoqwerty (qwerty but with neo layers) at the same time and started using layer-activated #HomeRowMods after #MRMCD25.

  16. @gumnos

Yeah, I've done stuff like that before, although I generally find it's easier to use the physically more easily accessible keys more than have fewer-but-harder keystrokes, like

    doas apt install ansiweather^[bbbcwpkg

    instead of

    doas apt install ansiweather^[0wcwpkg

    Not a perfect example, though. I also try to avoid hitting the number keys, as that takes more concentration than just mashing bbbbb or Fa;;;;;;

I'll also use A^[ as a "shorthand" for $ at times, just because it's easier to type those two strokes than that one, based on proximity to the home row.

    (#QWERTY peasant, of course, lol)

  18. Zinwa Q27 prototype brings classic BlackBerry style to a modern Android phone

The Zinwa Q27 is an upcoming smartphone that’s designed to look like a classic BlackBerry device, complete with a QWERTY keyboard. Made by a small team that got its start by replacing the insides of actual BlackBerry phones, the Q27 is Zinwa’s first phone featuring entirely brand new components: It has an AMOLED display, MediaTek Dimensity 7300 processor, and Android 16 software.

because I feared a lack of support for alternative layouts on my everyday apps.

  20. My hot take for today: staggered #QWERTY monolithic #keyboards are effectively the asbestos of office work: it takes years for people to notice the damage, and by then it can be too late

  21. After reading mastodon.online/@mwichary/1151 I've started wondering if I shouldn't try another #keyboard layout for fun.

Of course, not so I could "type faster". And that's for two reasons:

    1. To type faster, you have to learn the right hand and finger positions, etc. I know my habits ain't perfect, and I don't see a point in learning otherwise — see point two.

    2. At least in my case of creative writing, blunt typing speed isn't the bottleneck; figuring out what to write is. And most of my corrections aren't typos, but changes of thought.

In this case, I've figured out that there's really no point in learning touch typing with a new layout. So the most obvious choice for trying one is to use it on a touchscreen, where I could change the visible layout with no effort.

But then, I've started wondering: I mostly use gesture typing, and I've noticed that it's much easier when the letters constituting the word in question are spread across keyboard, rather than close to one another. In the latter case, the keyboard often has trouble in recognizing the correct word. If the ergonomic layouts focus on putting frequent letters close to one another, wouldn't gesture typing be harder?

And indeed, Colemak's FAQ clearly states that it's not recommended for smartphones. It's kinda curious that after so many years of #QWERTY being criticized, a new technology turns out to benefit from precisely this layout.

Oczywiście, nie rozważałem go po to, by "szybciej pisać". A to z dwóch powodów:
