Wanted to show my Avalanche V4 custom split keyboard. Features blank keycaps, because I can't be bothered to find a proper keycap set with uniform profile and runs QMK.

#Question for all you #MechanicalKeyboards aficionados out there: #QWERTY or #Colemak Mod-DH?

Situation: my 10yo kid will begin mid-school in September and wants my #ErgoDash (see picture) for his own computer (that I still have to buy!).
ErgoDash is currently configured with a QWERTY layout, customized with Italian accented letters as per picture.
Should I reconfigure it to Colemak Mod-DH, instead, before giving him the keeb?

Una de esas curiosidades que vuela la cabeza a mis alumnos de Mecanografía: por qué las letras están en ese orden en el teclado y no en cualquier otro? pues todo indica que por «fastidiar» y evitar que escribiéramos demasiado rápido con la tecnología original. Lo de escribir rápidamente la palabra «máquina de escribir» en inglés (typewriter) usando solo teclas de la fila superior para vender esta distribución suena más a leyenda urbana, pero también me gusta contarlo como curiosidad.

Es una pena que sea tan complicado cambiar a estas alturas a distribuciones mucho más sensatas como Colemak o incluso Dvorak. Mientras tanto, me conformo con mostrar una versión web interactiva.

Якщо ви збираєтесь переходити на оптимізовані клавіатурні розкладки англійської мови — раджу двічі подумати, перед тим, як всліпу обирати colemak-dh через його розпіареність. Крім сумісності з qwerty біндами (на світлині версія колемаку з меншою сумісностю задля кращої "ергономіки"), насправді, у порівнянні з новішими оптимізованими леяутами це можна називати "ергономічним пеклом", хоча він дійсно набагато кращий від qwerty та у популярних лідербордах, де використовують зазвичай застарілі аналізатори, посідає перше місце.

Особисто, раніше дивився лише на ті параметри, котрі використовує аналізатор github-сторінки colemak-mod-dh. Вирішив пошукати більш нішеві леяути клавіатур та знайшов дуже гарний сайт: https://layouts.wiki.

Colemak-DH зробили цілих 11 років тому (2014) й клавіатурні ентузіасти не стоять на місці, хоча ергономічно він програвав одному старішому леяутові навіть у свій час (MTGAP ansi з 2012, який я сам, до речі, зараз використовую і найближчим часом намірів переходити не маю).

Знахідка цього аналізатора значно покращить результат мого розслідування щодо оптимізації української клавіатури.

P.S: не зважайте на те, що на світлині порівнюються леяути зі стандартною фізичною клавіатурою. Навіть ерго/матричні клавіатури колемакові не сильно помагають.

In other shocking events, the #debian 13 graphical installer does not provide an option for a #colemak keyboard layout?!? First time I’ve tried desktop Debian… perhaps I can configure it post-install… but if not, I may have to take on a side quest.

but I've maintain a "Steam Curator" page for the last few years, keeping a log of how well games handle custom keyboard layouts - feel free to follow it if you want to see a note on Steam Store pages telling you whether a game's keybind settings are up-to-snuff:

I’m trying to learn Colemak just for the giggles. I’m coming from Qwerty so that’s fun. Any tips for learning Colemak or general tips for learning any new layout? The main resource I’ve been using is the Colemak Club site below to learn the layout. After I learn all the keys I plan to move to something like keybr.com for speeding up.

After started using the #Colemak keyboard as my main layout, I started thinking about replacing my vim-like key bindings with emacs ones. Unfortunately the standard #vim key bindings are too #querty specific. I don't have anything against #vi (I still use vis).

switched to #colemak a couple months ago and I don't recommend it. Too much work to switch and then you'll need to remap keybinds in programs. Then there will still be places in qwerty, another device etc.

So it you want improved #ergo I recommend limiting mouse usage. Vim and vim bindings in browser has a bigger payoff with a smaller learning curve.

i just realized i've been using #colemak for more than a year... maybe it's time to switch layouts again? :02lurk: that would be my 4rd time switching layouts lol(first qwerty then dvorak but back to qwerty bcs can't C-c with left hand only, then colemak)
