This tree at the trailhead — and the entire trail — is dedicated to a local landowner who died young from leukemia in 1993. I took several pictures of the tree from different distances and angles, and liked this one the best even though it only shows the core third of the tree. I should come back in a few months when it's filled out.

The Cupertino end of the same line, near the level crossing at Sunnyvale-Saratoga Road. This segment is also paralleled by an urban trail, but it's considerably older, presumably dating back to when the line was in regular use: there's a fence, “No Trespassing” signs, and some distance from the line. Debris in the mud suggests there might have been a passing track, storage line, or spur here long ago. Safe bet those houses are much newer.

Finally felt well enough to do some walking between medical appointments, and explored this delightful rail line parallel to Winchester Avenue in Campbell. Although well maintained, its only use had been to supply fuel a few times a week to the Lehigh Cement Plant in Cupertino, which suspended operations in 2020. Now that the plant is closing, I suspect this line will be abandoned entirely.
The surprising part is how the track is paralleled by an urban trail. Normally, walking along a railroad track is illegal: it's considered “trespassing on a railroad right of way.” But this “illegal” path even has professionally placed paving stones at the entrance and exit of the trestle crossing CA-85.

But West Coast lighthouses have a “problem”: they're always in beautiful and interesting places, and I get distracted. 😄 We were planning to visit this lighthouse at Point Arena and then continue to Mendocino, but spent 3+ hours exploring Stornetta and never got to Mendocino. 🤷♂️

Pinnacles is the western half of an ancient volcano that once straddled the San Andreas fault. There is a system of caves under the mountain, but they were only open in dry years and I can only recall exploring them once. But that was 30 years ago, 20 years before “drought” became part of our new normal. I'm curious what happened to those caves and this tiny reservoir those years, and what it looks like now after our record rainfall.
