  1. The Point Reyes peninsula (north and west of San Francisco) is gorgeous! Here's a photo from a very, very windy evening at Drake's Beach. View it larger and you'll see the sand being swept across the beach by the wind!

For #MeerMittwoch #SeaWednesday and #WaybackWednesday 😅 since this is from May 2013... sheesh that was 13 years ago... 😳

  6. @nationalparks #PointReyes #NationalSeashore is a #nationalpark near San Francisco established in 1962 by John F. Kennedy. The area encompasses a #peninsula and a small section of the adjacent ocean. It is of #tectonic interest because it lies on the #PacificPlate, which moves relative to the #NorthAmericanPlate with the San Andreas Fault between both. The peninsula has a special vegetation: the #Californiacoastalprairie.

  11. Breakers at Pt Reyes

Pt Reyes National Seashore. The north shore of this scenic area has some of the larger waves in the area as it is unprotected as the waves roll in off of the pacific. I really love this part of Northern California as the park is a protected wildlife refuge and a National Seashore. It is truly a treasure for the America just an hour north of San Francisco

  16. Keeping Cool

An elephant seal covers itself in sand to cool off. Elephant seals spend most of their lives in the ocean, regularly diving thousands of feet deep to feed. They're adapted to survive in deep frigid waters as cold as a few degrees above freezing, sporting a thick blubber layer and no sweat glands. When they haul out on beaches to breed, they regulate their temperature through active cooling, flipping cool damp sand onto their backs to cool off and block the sun.

  17. Look, here is a couple of hikers looking out over the ocean on #PointReyes in 2012! Just stare at the lovely landscape/seascape, and try to take a mental health break from the rest of your timeline right now.

  18. Maybe I should just keep posting photos from that lovely hide on #PointReyes in 2012 to drown out all the news in 2025. I did take over 250 pictures, so I can keep going a while.

  19. During that hike to #PointReyes with @incanus in 2012, I also took this photo of the #TuleElk, which I guess I will share now, since I have not seen a hashtag for posting pictures of #ungulates on any particular day of the week (unless anyone wants to make #Sungulates a thing).

  24. Anticipation

On the eve of #elephantsealmonth, everyone was preparing for the imminent arrival of female Northern Elephant Seals to give birth at Point Reyes. A bull staked a claim to a prime section of beach while a National Park Service ranger cleaned up bits of trash. (I used a telephoto lens here, so everyone looks closer together than they actually were. Both I and the ranger were staying at least 25 ft away from the seal, which is what @PointReyesNPS recommends to keep people and elephant seals […]

  25. Big Snooze

January, as everyone knows, is #elephantsealmonth. This big bull Northern Elephant Seal is kicking things off with a big snooze while waiting for the females to arrive.

  26. Pt Reyes Lighthouse

There are 308 stairs that lead down to the lighthouse and the lighthouse is 37 feet above sea level. The Point Reyes Lighthouse is the windiest and foggiest on the west coast. The station is often blanketed by weeklong periods of fog.
This particular overlook is also very popular with whale watchers. Spring and fall are the best time to see whales here.

  27. The Pt Reyes Lighthouse

The Pt. Reyes Lighthouse sits on the Northwestern Point of Pt. Reyes National Seashore in Marin County a little over an hour and a half north of San Francisco. The lighthouse wouldn't be so special if it didn't sit on the piece of real estate that it sits on.
To get out to the lighthouse a person must first walk down 300+ steps to get to the building.
