After making #ElectronicMusic, in some form, and playing in a band that has been centered around a #sequencer of some sort for over 25 years, I finally got my first "#groovebox" sequencer of my own, a #Synthstrom #Deluge. I've had a lot of different things that can sequence _or_ sample _or_ create synth patches but nothing that can do it all-in-one.

One of the absolutely coolest open source project I have come across recently was #synthstrom open-sourcing the OS of their music making machine, the Deluge. The #deluge / #synthstromdeluge is in my opinion still the best electronic music making machine there is.

Now there is a community firmware at https://github.com/SynthstromAudible/DelugeFirmware, next to the official one and the ways they've built on the hardware platform is just incredible.

It's one of the best cases for #opensource I've yet to see and I feel like there are a lot of lessons to be learned from it. I'm not that qualified to comment on them, but I think it is interesting that the switch from closed to open source for this hardware platform happened quite late, after the Deluge had built a dedicated fanbase over years and was already a very solid machine. Also the company has stuck to the same hardware platform now forever, which is rare, but super cool.

I do not know how many Deluge/ #synth fans there are in the fedi, but I finally got to play around more in-depth with the new community firmware over the last couple of days and the new Grid view (Ableton inspired) is amazing.

#Synthstrom is a small company with a great attitude. When they introduced the OLED screen to the Deluge instead of the 7-segment display it had before, they offered retrofit upgrades to all existing customers instead of trying to sell you new devices like pretty much the rest of the industry would.

This morning I downloaded the Deluge's daily nightly firmware to try the new Mutable reverb, based on Beads. There are so many nice features in the community firmware...I have no time to play with all the additions. 🙂
This new reverb is yet in development. They are fine tuning the details, but the hard work is already done. And its going to sound superb!

There is now a very interesting conversation in the Deluge discord about a few new performance features the next community firmware will bring. There are coming new creative ways to apply live FX using the Grid and maybe new modes combining keyboard and grid view. All this is right now being developed, so we have to give developers time to work. What a fantastic job they are doing with this community firmware. Take a look here:

Community Firmware 1.0.1 for the Synthstrom Deluge is now out. It comes with no new features, but with a few bug fixes. (The 1.0.0 firmware came with lots of changes just a few weeks ago)
I you have a Deluge I totally recommend you to install it. Lots, really lots of new great features that you will love.

Today I downloaded the latest Community Beta Firmware for the Deluge. It's fantastic. They are really doing a great job!
I was specially delighted with the new Grain FX, Fill Mode and Automation View, but there are lots of improvements. The Deluge scaled up to a new level.

OK, this is a bit off-topic, but a huge news if you're into #music production or #electronicMusic: #Synthstrom is open sourcing the #Deluge firmware! And employing the highly talented Jamie Fenton to maintain the #OpenSource branch.
Kudos to Synthstrom. What they're doing is incredible.
