okay hmm. I've now been extensively dogfooding #TasksOrg plus #Davx5 plus #Baikal as a lightweight #CalDAV backend for a couple weeks as part of my relaunch of personal task management, and I'm starting to think this would be a great subject for a video on the Surfhosting Peertube channel.
I need to use it for a few more weeks though, because I'm still discovering things about the software and letting my usage patterns evolve.
one cool thing that I think will make this useful is that I'm using Tasks.org (which is an Android app, despite the name) in at least three ways simultaneously: for tasks which repeat every single day, for a to-do list for the current day and upcoming days, and for a to-do list for various task domains which stretch up to several months into the future.
I think this will make for a great video on how to use this admittedly complicated but very powerful #selfhosted task management system.

and there it is. 11-month blocker defeated.

thinking ahead to my next phone running @GrapheneOS - anybody got opinions on Pixel 6a vs Pixel 7 (those exact models)?
I'm looking for a phone that will last for years, where I can replace the battery without too high a risk of breaking the device. I'm currently satisfied with the horsepower of a Poco F1 with Snapdragon 845 and 6GB RAM.
I'm really leery of the lack of microSD, but I want to try #GrapheneOS as a daily driver, so. #surfhosting

but thankfully there are parts of my #surfhosting tech stack which are fairly settled already:
OS: #LinuxMint; #Debian (with #LXQt if needed, or #BunsenLabs); #OpenWRT
Virtualization: #Proxmox
Hardware: refurb "1-liter" #1LPC business #miniPC from HP, Dell, Lenovo, with mid to high end CPU
Network: #GLiNet and #FriendlyElec #NanoPi routers / network-attached devices; #PiVPN
Phone: #VoipMS with dedicated SIP phone, plus softphone apps for limited use
Power: 90% of everything powered from compact #GaN USB-PD power supplies; 24/7 gear backed by ~15 year old consumer UPSes with drop-in LFP 12V batteries

after a number of rounds thru the spin cycle, I finally figured out what's the least-worst way to enable Tailscale nodes on the LAN side to connect to other Tailscale nodes on the WAN side uplink network (as opposed to on the entire internet) with an OpenWRT router sitting in between them.
this is important in my case because I have multiple LANs for various purposes (e.g. "personal" vs "work" services), and if this isn't set up, some of the Tailscale traffic will be routed via a distant relay on the internet rather than staying within my physical location.
anyway, the solution in OpenWRT Luci is Network > Firewall > Traffic Rules, and add a rule as pictured.
it's a good idea to specify your WAN network in the Destination Address field if you only want direct UDP connections to port 41641 to be forwarded to WAN (as opposed to the entire Internet) ... this can be useful if you use an always-on VPN like I do, and don't want to open a leak of Tailscale traffic to the wider internet, which would happen if you leave Destination Address unset.

Today is a #research and #learning day as well as setting up more utilities I may need in the future.
Doing all the stuff in the background that I will actually need or will make my life easier in the future. The silent stuff that isn't spectacular.
I need a rest quite frankly.
I think I learned more in like two weeks at 31 than I did in all of high school, and did a lot of work.
I guess I do get days off, I just have to choose.

I am attempting to make a short #video about an #adventure I went on in #losangeles today. Longer than the #shorts I have been posting, but not a giant video essay.
I need a pack of quality #royaltyfree #music or a source where it's available openly, and for free.
I am watching tons of #tutorials on #editing and attempting some #narration too.
MY BRAIN IS EXPLODING YET STILL HUNGRY.
I NEED SOME #help AND #fedihelp is the best.
Thanks bunches of oats! O.o

https://mastodon.pirateparty.be/@surfhosting This is a profile that stumbled across me that is attempting to make a concentrated source of information for people who #livestream and make #content in a nomadic way, and don't have a lot of tech at their disposal.
I found it to be very useful since I am a complete novice to modern #socialmedia after disappearing from the Internet for half a decade or so. Also for making content.

CW: 🔥 Couchers (Couchsurfing) went the same evil :lightning_bolt:
Oh dear God no 🔥 #Couchers 🔥

Coming from Couchsurfing lessons? It seems it's maybe a copy.
🛋️ Couchers Deleted 🗑️ and back to the ones that didn't go crazy - I don't need to host like that! Or try completely heading the wrong way to do trust and feedback how it was *between it's people*. Even just to try it or 'make it optional' as the road to hell later.

this is why I was messing around getting GaN miniature USB type C chargers on sale when my ass is about to be homeless.
that little carrying case holds a complete kit for nomadic "chilling here for a few hours/days" internet.
4G LTE modem/VPN capable WiFi router: GL.iNet GL-X750 v2 'Spitz'
VPN and repeater capable WiFi router: GL.iNet GL-A1300 'Slate Plus'
two type C chargers, two short cables, a type C to 12VDC barrel plug dongle. only the 4G antennas don't fit in the case.

@douglasvb #Couchsurfing I see still works
People did migrate to things like #couchers (see list below )
#surfhosting is like #selfhosting our own services too! (host or surf / feels like both sometimes! ) for peer-to-peer stuff, in-house brain sharing / seeding for the mind and doing stuff together !

this ... this is something that interests me for #surfhosting
Intel N95 vs N100 vs i3-305
all three are non-SMT processors with 100% Gracemont "E" cores, potentially excellent for pint-size low power servers
https://www.notebookcheck.net/N95-vs-N100-vs-i3-N305_14981_14932_14926.247596.0.html
...except, every manufacturer putting these in tiny computers just runs them at whatever TDP they feel like, so I dunno how relevant the comparison is.
it seems for example the Beelink Mini S12 Pro with the N100 runs the chip at a higher than rated TDP
so, it's hard to know if the N100 version or the N95 version of the Mini S12 will be better for general compute workloads..
-
it'd also be really nice to know how raw compute (NOT including GPU functions) stacks up between the N95 Beelink Mini S12 and the N100 Beelink Mini S12 Pro --
the N100 has 24 GPU compute units to the N95's 16, but I don't care about that for my use case
the N100 also has a 6 watt design TDP vs the N95's 15 watts
but when it comes to how #Beelink sets up the thermals in the Mini S12 [Pro], do they run both CPUs the same? or does the N95 run with a higher TDP?
if the N95 runs with a higher TDP, this may give it an advantage in non-GPU compute capability AND lower cost, since it's the "worse" CPU of the pair.
so far, I haven't found a real-world comparison of the two systems. #surfhosting

behold the Brume 2: this will be a file server velcro'd to the side of an external HDD enclosure containing an 8TB disk.
GL-iNet never disappoints when it comes to quirky hardware, and this is no exception, with its one (1) 2.5GbE port and the fact that it's based on a wifi SoC with no wifi capability. presumably they are making good use of chips with defects in the radio section.
specs: dual-core ARMv8 A53 @ 1.3GHz, 1GB DDR4, 8GB eMMC storage.
they bill it as an "edge computing" and/or VPN gateway device and indeed I used a Brume 1 as my primary router for about two years, but in this case I'll be happy if it can receive & serve data via rsync-over-ssh at the HDD's native speed. high hopes for the dual A53 @ 1.3GHz!
I'll be starting with the manufacturer firmware to see how it does, before potentially switching to vanilla OpenWRT. yes, an OpenWRT file server, don't awoo.
prospects for future vanilla OpenWRT support are excellent, being as the wifi-enabled version of the SoC was proposed for the OpenWRT reference design!

I had the chance to chat with a sysadmin doing similar things to what I'm trying to accomplish, and he mentioned #VyOS as a well-considered choice for virtualized routers - anybody got opinions? #SelfHosting #Surfhosting #AskFedi

#surfhosting is #selfhosting while #couchsurfing.
The surfhosting project is a HOWTO of one way to do this.
It's also a community for cyberpunks, cyberserfs, and surfery cybers who live the lifestyle by choice or not.
