  3. so, I spent another fruitful hour and a half or so poking at #TasksDotOrg today, initially just to garden my various todo lists, but then I noticed some unexpected behavior with the first Filter I'd created, and dug into it in order to make it work how I originally intended.

long story short: I succeeded, and now I have a couple Filters working perfectly (I think) which I'd very much needed: an all personal tasks filter, and an all tech-work tasks filter.

#TasksOrg is incredibly powerful software, but it's not 100% obvious how to use it to scratch your particular itch, and it probably won't ever be unless some deep work is done on presets at some point in the future. I'm not complaining that this hasn't been done, the developer has his work cut out for him just debugging & maintaining the software as-is ... and even so, he's now building a desktop app!

anyway, I absolutely *must* do a video on how I'm using the software, because I think it'll help a lot of people get started with one of the few comprehensive #CalDAV tasks solutions available for Android, and soon for desktop.

  5. had a task in Tasks.org to make a Tasks.org feature request for a combined list view, but when I went searching for pre-existing tickets, I learned that Filters accomplish this. so yay for that.

I really need to make a #TasksDotOrg video at some point, especially now that the dude is working on it full time and is building a desktop app. #TasksOrg

  7. the #TasksDotOrg dev shipped a feature I had on my list to request: per-list sorting.

this will allow me to use #TasksOrg as a routine checklist (sorted in arbitrary order) as well as a to-do list (sorted by due date).

  15. okay hmm. I've now been extensively dogfooding #TasksOrg plus #Davx5 plus #Baikal as a lightweight #CalDAV backend for a couple weeks as part of my relaunch of personal task management, and I'm starting to think this would be a great subject for a video on the Surfhosting Peertube channel.

I need to use it for a few more weeks though, because I'm still discovering things about the software and letting my usage patterns evolve.

one cool thing that I think will make this useful is that I'm using Tasks.org (which is an Android app, despite the name) in at least three ways simultaneously: for tasks which repeat every single day, for a to-do list for the current day and upcoming days, and for a to-do list for various task domains which stretch up to several months into the future.

I think this will make for a great video on how to use this admittedly complicated but very powerful #selfhosted task management system.

  17. I #selfhost my tasks, calendars, and contacts with #baikal.

In and of itself, this works quite well.

I have issues with the tasks, though. I access them on my computers in #thunderbird, and on my #android with #davx5 and #tasksorg.

The tasks often have differing tags and due dates across devices. Changes to the description and titles seem to be consistent, though.

Is this perhaps a known shortcoming of either #caldav, baikal, DAVx5, or one of the apps? 🤔

  19. @alerque @Torx

I've been meaning to properly set up #emacs' #orgmode for that but haven't had the capacity to do so and nc tasks worked well enough (until I actually started using it to a decent capacity).

This might be precisely what you are looking for though. And I might need to just do that ig.

There's an org-mode caldav adapter that, when I looked into it, gave me the impression of "very jank but might be workable".

Maybe I could even use #orgzly instead of #Tasksorg and nix #CalDAV.

  20. I'm expanding my workflow, meaning I now interact with my task lists on multiple devices.

I'm getting the impression that this is apparently not a common use case ...?

  22. I need to come up with a hashtag to track my search for calendaring + reminders on degoogled Android and Linux desktop... maybe #ExactlyHowManyCalDavAppsDoINeedAnyway

so, the point: I'm just noting down that Thunderbird calendaring is not gonna work for me because the way it displays tasks/reminders is just ... not gonna work. I would have to dismiss all the *past* reminders that regenerated each day but only show as the most recently-due instance on my phone.

or maybe it's the way #TasksOrg does reminders that act like Google's reminders that isn't gonna work with a lot of other clients, I'm not sure.

  24. Just #donate 'd to 11 #foss projects, despite my irregular income ( #artist #life ). Besides money it also did cost some time due to so many different #donation platforms, unfortunately. 😬

I'll try to list the projects as accounts or at least a tag (not all are on Mastodon, unfortunately). ❤️

  26. ...what 'sane defaults' in #TasksOrg you might ask?

well for one, a task I haven't completed should never disappear from the fucking notifications list!

turns out there is yet another obscenely complicated setting to make this happen. which took me months to figure out because my mental bandwidth for this crap is very limited.

  28. back on the "de-Googled calendaring on Android is worse than rocket science" rant, Tasks.org is one of a couple apps that I'd love to fork and make a simplified version with sane defaults and better UX. #CalDAV #TasksOrg

  30. Gotta say I'm happy with my current TODO list setup.

@nextcloud server hosts it. I use @planifyapp on Ubuntu and on Android.

  32. So I just tried the #nextcloud #dav-push app and, um well, it just ...works? That's a bit unexpected.

Immediate #caldav sync to the #android phone via #UnifiedPush. Just like that. Works with the regular-ass #DAVx5 + #ntfy from #fdroid.

No special setup required besides the basic caldav setup and clicking the ntfy app entry once in DAVx5's settings to enable unified push support.

    Works with #Tasksorg too.

I can't tell you how blissful that is; it just works.

  35. I finally, *finally* finished our self-hosting setup with a proper certificate and I can't believe how useful it is to have full control over everything. This is the best thing to happen to me since sliced bread, and I *LOVE* sliced bread.

Everything under my control. No prying eyes. No limitations. All the Open Source apps just support everything. I can't believe how good this is!

  39. I have been testing nextcloud + tasks.org as a replacement for todoist for several hours.

Everything is fine and dandy, but there is a problem with recuriing tasks.

nextcloud on front does not support this, but from tasks.org you can create it as a recurring task. the problem is that these events in nextcloud are... treated as tasks and when I mark them as completed, they... no longer repeat themselves.

    anyone have any solutions??

  41. One of the things I love about #TasksOrg is the start date feature. I didn't really use it at first ("I could start working on this whenever") but it's become a really valuable tool to keep from getting overly stressed or overwhelmed by irrelevant tasks.

I can say, "Look, realistically, I'm not gonna be able to do this before Monday", set the start date to Monday, and move on with my life.

Or say, "I don't really know where I'm at with this, I'll revisit it on Tuesday, when I know more", and move on.

Super useful if your brain automatically translates, "It's on the list" to "I should be doing it" like mine does.
