  1. Sometimes a fever dream of an idea grabs you by the lapels and will not let you go until you paint it. That’s what happened with Baba Yaga station. Torontonians may recognise that it's is inspired by Spadina station, which used to be a house, and was enough of a significant building that they just built a subway entrance directly into it. I’m pretty sure the upper portion of the building is still a habitable home. Wacky!

  2. I started listening to an Elmore Leonard audiobook: Killshot. His work is recommended for its incredible dialogue. I’m enjoying the book so far, which is filled with some pretty despicable humans, but I couldn’t help but be taken aback by some of the narrator’s pronunciations. At one point, he said a word that sounded like spa-DEEN-ah. I thought, how unusual. Maybe there’s another Spadina out there and it’s pronounced differently. But no, the scene was in Toronto (which the narrator also prononounced not the way a Torontonian would). Oops. #ElmoreLeonard #dialogue #audiobooks #pronunciation #Spadina

  3. December 2004. 346 #Spadina Ave, #Toronto, #Ontario, #Canada, from the roof of the Kensington Market parking garage. The main tenant was then 楓城酒樓 (Maple City Restaurant) but the building was still known for its original tenant, 新光酒樓 (New Light Restaurant, based in Hong Kong). It was a spectacular dim sum palace.

    #OTD Adele Haines Austin, #Canadian #Garden #Writer, is born.

She was raised w/ stunning #Gardens on property that is now the #Spadina #Museum in #Toronto.

She wrote The Canadian Garden Book (1913) using the pen name Dorothy Perkins - a nod to a popular hybrid #Rose.

Adele wasn't stuffy & wanted everyone to garden.
    She wrote,

    "Relax!
Most of you live in a whirl.
Your threadbare, overstrained nerves are crying out for relaxation.
Help create a Canadian garden picture!"

  5. TBT: Daniel at Kom Jug Yuen, 2005 11 06, 371 #Spadina Avenue, #Toronto #Ontario #Canada. KJY had been around for generations; grubby, noisy, busy, food excellent & cheap. Handwritten menus on dayglo paper. Working-class food, it didn't weather the gentrification of Spadina well. Someday I hope someone writes a history.

  6. Little tidbit that even most Torontonians don't know: #Spadina rhymes with Tina, not China. #Toronto #TheMoreYouKnow
