  1. Whisper of a Tern

I’ve said before that a photograph doesn’t need to be perfect to be worth enjoying. This soft image of a royal tern (Thalasseus maximus) is a good example. The bird is turning toward me mid‑flight, almost as if it knows I’m trying to catch the moment.

I took the shot while drifting down the Savannah River on a riverboat, with several terns following along behind us. There was something gentle about the way this one broke formation and angled toward me, wings open, light softening everything around it. Imperfect, yes—but full of life.

Step into a world where even the smallest moments—like the glint in a bird's eye—tell their own story.

  6. Sky Has No Edges

While touring the Savannah River near Savannah, Georgia, I noticed a few royal terns (Thalasseus maximus) trailing and circling the boat. They seemed to follow with purpose—perhaps drawn by the occasional snack tossed from passengers, or by the boat’s wake stirring up small fish and aquatic invertebrates. Either way, they moved with practiced grace, scanning the water below like airborne opportunists.

  11. Royal Tern in the Sky

A few days ago, I shared a story about being aboard a riverboat with laughing gulls trailing behind. I was mistaken—the birds following the boat were actually royal terns (Thalasseus maximus). The bird in this image is one of those graceful companions.

  16. Beach Ballet

It was hot today in a lot of places, so I thought maybe a beach scene would be cool. 😎🪭

This is a scene from Holly Beach, Louisiana, the birds are various gulls and terns.

I don't post all of the photos that I post here to my Pixels gallery, but I post the photos I like best. Some don't make the cut. I usually wait a couple of days and see how I feel about it then.

  21. Let's all go to the party.

These are a bunch of royal terns (Thalasseus maximus), Forester's terns (Sterna forsteri), and ring billed gulls (Larus delawarensis). The focus is on the Forester's terns closer to the bottom of the frame. This was at Holly Beach, Louisiana.

"Flashing slender, silvery wings and an elegantly forked tail, Forster's Terns cruise above the shallow waters of marshes and coastlines looking for fish. These medium-sized white terns are often confused with the similar Common Tern, but Forster’s Terns have a longer tail and, in nonbreeding plumage, a distinctive black eye patch. Where Common breeds on outer beaches and barrier islands, Forster’s nests farther inland, on edges of freshwater marshes and saltmarshes. It is the only medium-sized tern species found in the United States mainland in winter." - allaboutbirds.org

Here are a bunch of mostly royal and Forester's terns. There is a gull on the left side, maybe a black-billed gull. On the bottom right is a sanderling racing the waves.
