Great Black-backed Gull at Jones Beach Friday, 8.14. One of the gull species whose catholic tastes and adaptability has allowed them to survive and flourish around human habitations. Apex predators in some habitats, they will feed on other birds and mammals. They also show the same propensity as other members of the family to engage in kleptoparasitism, stealing prey even from raptors like Peregrine Falcons. But, they are not above frequenting landfills in search of meals.

I’ve been reading more about this foraging behaviour by gulls. It’s called “Foot Paddling” and various gulls and other coastal birds around the world do it. I found a 1999 article by a geologist at the University of Auckland, Murray Gregory, who gets excited about the possibility that gulls’ foot paddling puddles might be visible in the fossil record.
Also, when small birds do it, it’s not “foot paddling”, it’s “foot trembling”, as in “The recently arrived Black-fronted dotterel also indulges in foot-trembling.”

On Thursday I watched this tarāpunga (NZ Red-billed Gull) on the edge of the ocean repeatedly doing a slow shuffle dance in the wet sand. It would shuffle its feet to make a wet puddle then stop and eat whatever little invertebrates rose to the surface. Then it would do its dance steps again.
Definitely full marks for style and smarts.
