I made a bird. Trying to get better at drawing without outlines. Still so many undefined areas because I am scared of "hard" lines. But I like the result regardless. This was fun to draw for me. More of a "flowy" "chisely" style rather than trying to make the best of a sketch.

Shoreline Illusion

During one of my forays to the beach at Gulfport, Mississippi, I captured this interesting image of a ring‑billed gull (Larus delawarensis) and a snowy egret (Egretta thula). The scale in the photo feels a bit deceptive. The egret, which is actually the closer and much larger of the two birds, appears almost the same size as the gull. Maybe it’s just me, but the perspective plays a clever little trick on the eye.

Moment in Flight

This is a fairly good image of a ring-billed gull (Larus delawarensis) mid-descent, focused on landing. I’d love to say I captured this moment on a secluded beach, but the reality is far less picturesque—I snapped it in a Walmart parking lot in Albany, Georgia, far from the ocean. Unbothered by the lack of sea breeze, the gull was intent on settling atop a light pole. Ring-bills are nothing if not adaptable.

Beachside Gathering

Here is a scene from Holly Beach, Louisiana. There are two ring-billed bulls (Larus delawarensis) in the foreground and three royal terns (Thalasseus maximus) farther back. If you notice beneath the foremost gull, there is the bottom of a smaller white bird with black legs, that bird is likely a forester's tern.

This ring billed gull (Larus delawarensis) passed me by at the beach at Gulfport, Mississippi on the Gulf of Mexico.

"Familiar acrobats of the air, Ring-billed Gulls nimbly pluck tossed tidbits from on high. Comfortable around humans, they frequent parking lots, garbage dumps, beaches, and fields, sometimes by the hundreds. These are the gulls you're most likely to see far away from coastal areas—in fact, most Ring-billed Gulls nest in the interior of the continent, near freshwater. A black band encircling the yellow bill helps distinguish adults from other gulls—but look closely, as some other species have black or red spots on the bill." - allaboutbirds.org

These are three birds that I saw at Holly Beach, Louisiana on the Gulf of Mexico. The larger bird on the left is a ring billed gull (Larus delawarensis), on the right is a smaller laughing gull (Leucophaeus atricilla), and the tiny not quite in focus bird between them is a sanderling (Calidris alba).

It will be a scorcher today, how about a beach scene. It's interesting that shore birds at the beach almost always face the ocean. In this photo there are royal terns (Thalasseus maximus) with the orange bills, Forester's terns (Sterna forsteri), the smaller birds in front, and there are some ring-bill gulls Larus (delawarensis) mixed int among the terns.
