I don’t want to sound like a broken record, but I really do need to straighten up my office. It’s out of control again. Computers and stray parts are scattered across my old desk, mixed in with cameras and whatever else has migrated there. Papers of every imaginable origin are waiting for some kind of decision, and a new stack of books has begun forming on the floor beside the bookcase—right where the last one used to be.
I don’t think it’s pure laziness, though that plays its part. It’s more that clutter just doesn’t bother me the way it once did. There was a time when the sight of a messy room would make me cringe and immediately start straightening. Now I look at it and think… eh. The good thing about this new attitude is that there’s always tomorrow, and whatever needs straightening will still be there. The bad thing is that whatever needs straightening will still be there—probably with one new thing added to the pile.
In my defense, I stay pretty busy. Even now, while I’m typing this, I’m contemplating a well‑deserved nap. Charlie usually gives me an hour or so to handle that task; truthfully, I suspect he naps too. And then there’s the TV—if I’m foolish enough to turn it on, I find myself trapped in the recliner, nearly prone and unable to move. That chair is eerily magical, a universe unto itself, with the rest of creation swirling around it. It takes almost cosmic strength to break the spell and pull myself free. The urge to use the bathroom works too.

Skimming the Divide
Here’s a photo of a black skimmer (Rynchops niger) gliding low over the shallows in search of food. At first glance, it looks eyeless—its dark eye nearly vanishes into the black plumage. It reminds me of those blind creatures in sci-fi films that hunt by sound alone.

Tidal Assembly
This is a mixed bunch of birds on the beach at Gulfport, Mississippi in the fall. The birds are a mix of laughing gulls (Leucophaeus atricilla) and black skimmers (Rynchops niger). Notice that many of the birds have their head turned backwards and their bills tucked beneath their wings. The bill is an extremity, and they tuck them beneath their wings to warm them, like we might put our fingers beneath our arm pits to warm them on a cold day.

Some days life is just too much.
@CTGT and I laughed when we came across a small group of Black Skimmers laid out flat on the sand in the front of their sand dune nesting area. Others entertained us with their barking laugh calls and mock air battles. Totally charming birds.

I thought this was an interesting angle for a black skimmer (Rynchops niger) photo.
"A long-winged bird with stark black-and-white plumage, the Black Skimmer has a unique grace as it forages in flight. Skimmers feed by opening the bill and dropping the long, narrow lower mandible into the water, skimming along until they feel a fish. Then they relax the neck, quickly closing their jaws and whipping the fish out of the water. Because they feed by essentially by touch, they can even forage at night. The world’s three species of skimmers are the only birds on earth that feed in this manner." - allaboutbirds.org

Here is a photograph of a bunch of black skimmers (Rynchops niger) at Gulfport, Mississippi. Post one of these every now and again, the last times we were there, I probably took hundreds of pictures of these fascinating birds.

Skimmers will skim.
Here's another photo of a black skimmer (Rynchops niger) skimming along the shallow for food. The bird looks like it doesn't have eyes, but a closer look reveals a black eye among the black feathers. It makes me think a bit about blind creatures in a sci-fi movie who hunt by sound.
I took this photograph at Gulfport, Mississippi.

I wanted to show you these black skimmers (Rynchops niger) gathering on the beach., particularly for those of you who haven't seen this before - I know I hadn't. This photograph just shows a fraction of the birds in this group, and there were several groups on the beach. I've already posted a couple photos of these birds and am sure to post more. I find them fascinating.
"Possibly the best description of the Black Skimmer's bounding, head-down foraging style came from the great seabird biologist R. C. Murphy in 1936. He said they look like “unworldly… aerial beagles hot on the scent of aerial rabbits.”" - allaboutbirds.org
