I'm so sad that #VickyPhelan has passed. She was so unflinching in her refusal to accept the unacceptable, and so deeply ethical in her fight as well as generous with her support. I'll never forget her having time to reach out to me with support for #repealthe8th, even with all she had on her own plate she saw the necessity of solidarity in struggle. I can't get out of my head what an awful thorn in her side it must have been to have had Tony Holohan so lionised in her final years.

I know we called Twitter a hellsite and most of us deactivated multiple times but I'm just thinking about #repealthe8th and #hometovote and even the Super Mario red beret thread and how these things couldn't have kicked off on a different social media website.
Even if Mastodon takes off, we have lost something. Or rather, we have had something stolen from us.

@AdamConway I left Twitter a few months ago because of the relentless bleakness of it all. Missed the craic, the community, the genuine pals I met there that moved from virtual to real world but couldn't face any more shite from egg accounts with loads of numbers in their user names who seem to thrive on misery. Twitter was great for social movements like #repealthe8th but its power was in the real people who used it for conversation & sharing which disappeared in the last year or two.
