  1. What are we to understand from the tragedy of #VickyPhelan’s death and the brave disclosure of her misfortune?

Fintan O’Toole reminds us to pay attention to two small words: SHALL and MAY and how the substitution of the former for the later by thoughtless, clueless or corrupt legislators led to a tragedy. Relying on voluntary disclosure = foolishness

  2. We’ve lost someone good today #vickyphelan

But the state and medical care needs to listen and actively work on ensuring voices are heard and respected. People shouldn’t need to give up their privacy and fight. Too often this is needed to get basic medical care. If state grief is sincere let’s stop ignoring people who need care.

  3. On the occasion of the death of #VickyPhelan, one of Ireland’s most effective campaigners, I was reflecting that the problems with state behaviour she highlighted aren’t different to the problems of the Mother & Baby Homes, the Magdalen laundries, the infant organ retention scheme or the State’s tactic of dragging out catastrophic birth injuries with denials of liability for years.

The common thread is the State’s view of citizens and itself as more important than them.

  4. CW: Govt reaction to Vicky Phelan's death.

The statements from govt following the death of #VickyPhelan are making me feel some kind of way.

Knowing that she *told* them that action on the issue was all she wanted and that she didn't want their weasel words and eulogies... here they all are, tiptoeing around the fact that they owe her and the others affected by the CervicalCheck scandal far more than any insipid statement.

Tiptoeing around the fact that they failed her. That they failed all of us.

  5. I don’t want your apologies
    I don’t want your tributes.
I don’t want your aide de camp at my funeral.
I don’t want your accolades or broken or promises.
    I want action.
    I want change.
    I want accountability.

  6. Vicky’s campaigning has made Ireland a better place for women, and had an immensely positive impact on women’s healthcare. She truly was the best of us. Rest in peace, Vicky #VickyPhelan rte.ie/news/2022/1114/1335986-

  7. I wrote this piece about the truly remarkable and courageous Vicky Phelan for Independent.ie in 2018.
    RIP #VickyPhelan
The women of Ireland are hugely indebted to you.
Thank you for everything you did for us.

  8. I'm so sad that #VickyPhelan has passed. She was so unflinching in her refusal to accept the unacceptable, and so deeply ethical in her fight as well as generous with her support. I'll never forget her having time to reach out to me with support for #repealthe8th, even with all she had on her own plate she saw the necessity of solidarity in struggle. I can't get out of my head what an awful thorn in her side it must have been to have had Tony Holohan so lionised in her final years.

  10. her own words show her great courage - she refused to accept meaningless platitudes, she demanded real change. Rest in power Vicky #VickyPhelan

  11. "A woman leans down to catch a child
who has run into her arms
    this moment.

    Stars rise.
    Moths flutter.
    Apples sweeten in the dark"

    RIP Vicky Phelan.

  12. #VickyPhelan lived in Limerick. Coincidentally and unrelated to the #CervicalSmear scandal, this #IrishTimes report on local hospital re: safety allegations appears on the same day of her death with this headline..."More than 70 doctors at University Hospital Limerick make protected disclosure over safety risks to patients" irishtimes.com/health/2022/11/

  13. Really really sad that #VickyPhelan has died. So many examples in #Ireland of #women's healthcare being ignored. May we all learn something and continue to strive to make Ireland's health care system a priority for all, affordable, efficient, timely and equal. #FundHealthCare

  14. CW: RIP

#RestInPower Vicky Phelan. You really made a difference and your memory and legacy will live on.
