  1. Going through backlog in podcasts and had an old Changelog episode mentions the Free as in Freedom ( FaiF ) podcast. If you're interested in FLOSS licensing ( or FLOSS in general ) and haven't listened to FaiF you should grab the back catalog and listen to it

Changeloggers mentioned Karen having been on the show in the past

I episode down, two episodes added to queue :)

  2. As I already wrote before, the whole copyright/copyleft matter is totally inadequate to modern times. That's the only sure thing now

  3. #OpenSource Isn't Dead...It's Just Forked
#Relicensing has forced the open source world to confront its identity crisis. Are we building digital commons, or are we just subsidizing corporate profit? The answer lies in how we interpret and address the motivations behind relicensing and the community’s response to it.
Critics see it as a breach of trust, where corporate priorities overshadow the ethos of open collaboration.

  4. Another turns to the dark side.
announced discontinuing its OSS edition (AGPL license), and the Enterprise edition to a source-available (non ) one.

Remember folks: vendor-owned open source is an oxymoron.

  5. William Morgan, CEO of Buoyant states that open source is sustainable under a single vendor as long as they "have clear economic incentives to keep doing what they're doing".

But he avoids the elephant in the room.

  6. The most exciting moment of Open Source Summit 2024 last month for me wasn't when I went on stage.

It was at the very first minutes of the conference, during the opening keynote,
when I saw my humble blog post "When Your Open Source Turns to the Dark Side" featured 🤩

It was surreal to see my personal blog quoted alongside The New York Times, WIRED and the European Commission's Joinup magazine 😍

  7. Sentry is running a campaign for the new marketing term "fair source". Currently this boils down to their new Functional Source License (FSL).
So far there's not much traction: GitButler and four early stage startups.
What differentiation does this new category offer from source available?
And most importantly, it doesn't address the main concern:
When owned by a single vendor, project license is volatile. horovits.medium.com/b5486a4de1

  9. In case you were on summer holiday and missed it:
    Last week was relicensed, again.
Three years after Elastic took it off open source.

I scribed a few notes about this move:
    linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:l

  10. Elastic's title got me so excited.
Then I read the fine print.
No, Elasticsearch isn't going back to the original Apache2 license.
Instead it's adding AGPL copyleft license (on top of the non-FOSS ones).
It wants to regain its open source status, yet own it.

  11. Here it goes again. Cockroach Labs is moving to a fully proprietary license.
To be fair, they've already shifted away from back in 2019, when they replaced Apache2 with Business Source License for their Core.
(* just realized they've taken down the 2019 blog)

This joins the recent of , and other prominent projects. Which brings us back to the fundamental question:
𝗜𝘀 𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝘄𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻 𝗼𝘅𝘆𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗼𝗻?

  12. Why should you care that an open source project you use is controlled by a single vendor?

  13. I don't use Benthos, but @richardartoul shares in his blog that in the hours after Redpanda acquired it "began transitioning it to a proprietary software model".
Which led @warpstream_labs to fork it.

  14. 📢 May episode of OpenObservability Talks is out - 4th Season Finale! 📢

With all the recent cases of projects "turning to the dark side", topped with the recent (and the community led fork ) it was time to look into the state of (free and open source software).

I was joined by David Nalley, Director of Open Source Strategy at , President of the The Apache Software Foundation @TheASF and a FOSS veteran for over 2 decades

  15. IBM looking to acquire HashiCorp.
Looks like Hashi's recent move to lock in open source customers and force them into its commercial products is paying off. Stay tuned.

  16. Missed my talk at Americas last month on turning to the dark side? Good news: USENIX Association just published it to YouTube😍
With everything that's happening around and more - you'd find it more relevant than ever:

  17. The dark side of open source goes beyond rights ratchet.

Sad to see HashiCorp, the once great FOSS champion, reducing itself to legal intimidation of OSS projects it perceives as competition.

If it's indeed FUD, OpenTofu will come out stronger in the community, while Hashi wanes.

Among other benefits, it supports a large fraction of the Redis API surface, and you can use it from unmodified Redis clients (as it uses the RESP wire protocol).

  19. @juliobiason
#Copyright holders can relicense their work under any license they like anytime.
Yet: 1)Usually the original authors are the copyright holders
    2) #relicensing should comply with other licensed works (I.e. libraries, frameworks and so on)
    3) AFAICS #BSD and #Apache #licenses does not have termination clauses that actually works

  20. 🚨 is moving away from and into source-available model.
Funny enough, I just landed in from Americas, after giving a talk about the dark side of open source, to find this fresh example ☹️

  21. "Upon reflection, I’ve come to realize that the #relicensing trend towards non-compete licenses has exposed single-vendor #OpenSource software for what it truly is: #proprietary software in hiding (or neo-proprietary, as Dirk Riehle said a few years ago). This post will go into detail on how I came to this conclusion."
