  1. The argument against Source Available licenses in a single sentence;

    Huh. No wonder warning them that a relicense to SPPL would only result in a fork had no impact. It never occurred to me that getting corporate re-users to fork was the *goal*! But that kind of makes sense.

  8. Wow Keychron sharing all the industrial design files for 83 of their products is very cool. They're releasing it as a source-available non-commercial license but explicitly encourages non-commercial community modding and accessory development. This is also very encouraging from a right to repair perspective!

  11. A couple of years back, a bunch of projects started switching to proprietary Source Available licenses like #SSPL. I predicted that they would soon regret it, as they started to be replaced with forks of their own software. Feeling pretty smug reading this ...

    "Redis bets big on an open source return

    The company is hopeful that changing its license will allow it to better compete with the Valkey fork."

    It is very, very simple but people seem to be enjoying it! You can read about the algorithm or look over the code!

  13. 👀 Why We’re Moving to a Source Available License - ScyllaDB

    "As the Enterprise version branched out of the OSS branch, it was helpful to keep a unified base for reuse and efficiency. However, it reduced our paid version differentiation since all features were open by default (unless flagged)."

  14. @kfdm @teleclimber @aljazmerzen @dahukanna @scottjenson yeah Cloudron is Docker based too, and the individual Cloudron app packages they create are all themselves #opensource git.cloudron.io/apps it's just the core @cloudron platform itself that is only #sourceavailable

  15. @teleclimber @aljazmerzen @dahukanna @scottjenson my favourite thing in this space is @cloudron it's by far the best IMHO. It's not #opensource but it's #sourceavailable. I started a thread on their forum of other similar things here which may be of interest forum.cloudron.io/post/73347

  16. I just found out that @bookwyrm is Source Available, not Free Code (or as most people call it "Open Source");

    github.com/bookwyrm-social/boo

    Which means if anyone asks, I'll be recommending NeoDB (AGPL) instead;

  17. More proprietary Source Available nonsense;

    once.com/license

    However, this is still worth a read;

    once.com/

    Everything he says there applies equally to voluntarily paying a purchase fee for an AGPL package, even though you could just assemble it yourself from source code.

  19. Sentry is running a campaign for the new marketing term "fair source". Currently this boils down to their new Functional Source License (FSL).
    So far there's not much traction: GitButler and four early stage startups.
    What differentiation does this new category offer from source available?
    And most importantly, it doesn't address the main concern:
    When owned by a single vendor, project license is volatile. horovits.medium.com/b5486a4de1

  20. "Last Thursday... Redis announced that it had changed the license covering its software from the open-source 3-Clause BSD License to the Redis Source Available License and the Server Side Public License, both source-available proprietary licenses..."

  21. @clacke
    "if the Linux kernel adopted [#HippocraticLicense], then for SaaS companies even the smallest, most inadvertent violations of labor law could turn from something resolvable with payment of a governmentally determined reasonable fine into a huge, potentially extinction-level problem."

    Exactly. Most companies would freak out if #Linux was relicensed to #GPLv3. No company will use software under a #SourceAvailable license, unless they can buy an exemption from complying with its terms.
