If I'm reading the tech news correctly this morning, the slop machine vendors have all pulled the classical bait-and-switch tactic of the drug dealer: the first one's free.
It pains me, a little, to see so many people/small businesses/not for profit enterprises etc being burned now having gone "all in" on those products.
Publicly funded bodies such as universities are going to get whacked hard, too, even if they do exert control on that side of IT.
Oh well.

Back in 1967, I went to see Valley of the Dolls in theaters. I can’t remember if it was a walk-in or a drive-in, but the title and the advertising had us convinced it was a horror flick—something along the lines of Village of the Damned. I kept waiting for the big reveal, the moment when the horror would finally show its face. It never did. Sitting through most of it, I probably thought, “Lord, just take me now.” More recently, Pig with Nicolas Cage pulled the same trick. I went in expecting John Wick with a truffle pig and got… well, I still don’t know what I got. Maybe it’s a case of judging a book by its cover—or maybe just slick producer bait, dressed up to mislead.”

Going further, there is an anti-consumer aspect... The trusty old PC tools begin to access network resources for you, but then those resources switch to seamlessly uploading your private data for remote processing before downloading the output. That boundary was crossed long ago and there is no labeling standard to make users aware that it exists; all you get is the tiny text in a EULA!
Streamlining beyond the point of irreducible complexity (the level needed for users to retain full control) grants some degree of power, but its the kind of power that can be taken away instantly leaving you worse off than before. #baitandswitch

@sxa I’ve been actively challenging people’s position on Bluesky. It’s a bait and switch. When asked to engage critically with the network the goodness of the whole thing quickly falls to bits.
Yeah I encourage you to respectfully challenge each interaction where folks are estolling the virtues of Bluesky. Mostly this venture funded corporation is just extracting its messaging from the good work of the fediverse.
I have lots of examples of big red flags with Bluesky if you need me to share any.
