I've spent a decent chunk of today taking apart my Rancilio Silvia Pro coffee machine (Which is an awesome bit of kit and has served me well for probably the last 5 years) to replace the hoses on it for the water tank as well as replace the water tank and the shower screen for the portafilter and I'm now at the terrifying stage of having (with a lot more difficulty than I expected) replaced the hoses, I've now got to figure out how it all goes together so I can run a cleaning cycle or two through it and enjoy some great coffee in the morning.

Juhuuu, sie funktioniert wieder!! ❤️❤️

Nach einem Besuch im Baumarkt hatte ich dann das richtige Werkzeug um das Magnetventil für den Heißwasserauslass auszubauen. Darunter hatte sich Schmutz festgesetzt, der verhindert hat, dass das Ventil schließen konnte. Somit hat das Heißwasser permanent getropft.

Aber jetzt geht‘s wieder, und es ist ein tolles Gefühl wieder etwas selbst repariert zu haben 🥳

The Rancilio Stile grinder - fully seasoned, is usually within .25g a dose or smaller, based on its timer.

That is... REALLY good. Here's two doses, 3 shots apart (ie, I did three shot pulls I didn't photograph the measurements of). The other two doses were within 0.15g of the first one.

But I'm so happy with my new toy and I had to play with it.
And it really pulls some beautiful shots.

- Coffee: Dreispitz from Kaffeemacher:innen. A medium-roasted 2+1 blend of Arabica from Nicaragua, Brasil and Robusta from India. Hazelnut, Chocolate and a pleasant acidity.
- Dose: 14g
- Yield: 33g
- Time: 29s

Just took my sweet time to set up the new espresso machine... after having to carry the 25kg parcel up into the 4th floor. Oh, my deer... -.-
But... IT'S HERE! And I couldn't be happier!

So.... meet the new Miss!
The Rancilio Miss Silvia Pro X black.

I'm staying with Rancilio as a brand, because I am very happy with the build quality, temperature stability and overall performance.

The SPX is a dual boiler machine with a 0,3L brew boiler and a 1,0L steam boiler with PID and a bunch of useful features, like a shot timer, pressure gauge, Group head flush, cleaning cycle etc.
Heats up very quickly. With the steam boiler, it's ready to go in 11 minutes. Even less if you turn off the steam boiler.
Comes with a decent enough 58mm metal tamper and two reasonably well-made filter baskets.
I won't use both tamper and baskets, because I have a couple of VST precision baskets and my Normcore V4 Titanium tamper, but if you are just starting, they look decent enough.
I also switched out the typical mesh shower screen for an IMS competition shower screen.
No, it doesn't do much for the taste, but it is far easier to clean and fine coffee particles don't get behind the screen (or get stuck in the mesh)

The big Miss Silvia also built like a tank and has the aesthetic charm of an old Volvo car.
Which honestly ... I very much prefer over the typical Faema E61 chrome "Steampunk" monsters.

And yes, there are a few issues, like with every machine.
The typical "Rancilio Silvia" quirks, like the tiny drip tray, which will get replaced in the future.
Or the water tank with hoses instead of a more modern quick coupling system.
Or the questionable placement of the drain from the 3way valve.
But nothing really major and more of an inconvenience than really a big problem.
Compared to other machines, even well into the 2000+ € class, the Silvia Pro X has remarkably few real issues.

Already pulled my first shots of espresso.
Very chilled workflow, lots of space under the group head and the shot timer makes it so much more convenient.
Tasted great as well. Even feel a little more balanced than the (already tasty) shots that I pulled with the Little Miss.

And it is funny how big it is, compared to the Little Miss in the 4th Photo ^.^'
But it still fits very nicely into my existing setup.

As I said ... I really couldn't be happier!

Another grinder we're currently testing, this one's from a heavyweight in the #espresso arena: #Rancilio.

We've had the Rancilio Stile grinder on the test bench for a few months, and I'm almost ready to post our intro post for it on CoffeeGeek. For now, some photos, incl. Rancilio's super enviro-friendly packaging (KUDOS!).

There was a tragic murder in Milano of Fiorenza Rancilio, a noted business leader in the area.

To make it super clear, she is not related in any way (via business or family) to Roberto Rancilio, the founder of the Rancilio espresso machine company, or any of the current Rancilio family involved with the espresso machine maker.

There's been some speculation on coffee social media there is a connection to #Rancilio. there is not.

There's been a lot of focus on the noise and vibration issues I raised in that article regarding the machine.

Rancilio has remedied that on both the Silvia Pro (sorta discontinued) and the Silvia Pro X, a long time ago. They also have a kit available to fix the problem on early-adopter purchases. Will have more info on that soon.

A wealth of goods arrived from #Rancilio today.

It's the 25th Anniversary of the iconic, ground breaking, #espresso changing machine known as the Rancilio Silvia. We're doing a huge feature on the machine and its legacy and contributions to coffee.

Rancilio sent us a new one (I already have 2 - a 2003 version and 2006 version). They also sent:

Having #PID control on my #Rancilio Miss #Sylvia now is a great step forward (and it's making the Sylvia already better and more valuable).
Even if it's not the final form yet or more of an improvised setup that @Kuraiko built with an external control box, being able to accurately control brew temperature is awesome.
Temperature surfing was always a hassle, affecting both work flow and the quality of the #coffee I got.
Now I can pull shots at always the right temperature, helping me a lot on the way to consistency.
And consistent #espresso is what it's all about in the end.

@BadGranny Thanks! It's trickier with a lever, but I'm tempted. It does look great and apparently the #Elektra does much better with frothing than a Pavoni, so #Pavoni is off the list. I admit, I have never had trouble with a scorched taste with the #Rancilio
