Also, a blast from the past: a review of the V4 version of the Rancilio Silvia, from 2007, on CoffeeGeek.
The machine is not much changed since then. Minor update in 2012, and in 2020, they did the following updates:
- new switches
- black cowling around grouphead
- stainless steel updated wand
- insulated boiler
- slightly different pump. -
Temperature surfing espresso machines like the #RancilioSilvia and #GaggiaClassic were techniques born in the CoffeeGeek forums back in 2002 through 2006 and beyond.
Temperature surfing can really, dramatically improve the quality of espresso your machine puts out.
I feel some modern takes on doing this are just way too complicated, however.
For instance, Lance, (who does great videos!) really kinda complicates the Classic here a lot.

OLD SCHOOL #Rancilio Silvias.
Pictured:
1. Original 1999 #RancilioSilvia, first real production run. NB the stencilled on logo, different portafilter, teflon coated spouts (and inside the PF too).
2. Same machine in use.
3. Gen 2 Silvia, 2002 (note has Rancilio "plate" but "silvia" sticker). Next to a 2000 variant of the #Gaggia Classic. We had massive reviews of these on CG back in the day.

It's too bad the Silvia Pro sounds like a train wreck everytime its pump is activated. Really bad engineering decision, hard-connecting the steam boiler's pump (a solid copper tube).
Otherwise, the Pro is quite nice.
