🙄 Ah yes, the earth-shattering #saga of swapping one #geeky tool for another: from "Stow" to "chezmoi." 🚀 Because managing #dotfiles is obviously the pinnacle of #human #achievement and the most riveting tale of our time. 😏

I haven't switched my distribution since I started using #GnuStow to manage my dotfiles. I installed stow, pulled my repo, and everything worked as expected. I love this setup!

I finally took the leap and started using #stow for managing my dotfiles.
This is so amazing and once you get past the horrifying GNU documentation, it gets pretty easy, And it is simply AWESOME.
I also created a simple helper script for stow with #babashka to make managing my dotfiles simpler.
Now I manage dotfiles for different devices in a cohesive and super clean manner.

I'm tweaking my dot files to work with #GNU #stow.
Pretty neat! And it works on #macOS too! :D

Replaced GNU stow by git bare repo as described https://dev.to/bowmanjd/store-home-directory-config-files-dotfiles-in-git-using-bash-zsh-or-powershell-the-bare-repo-approach-35l3
I never learned stow and a simple alias fixed all my needs.
alias dtf='git --git-dir=$HOME/projects/vyskocilm/dotfiles/ --work-tree=$HOME'

@gozes I ended up switching to using guix sd (the operating system instead of just using the package manager for my dotfiles) after about 2 years of managing my dotfiles with it. There was a period were I used but #stow and #guix as I transitioned.
To add a bit more context: I came from #archlinux after getting nix curious. Its worth noting that prior to arch, I've used many distros..I've been on linux as my sole/primary OS since ~2003.
fwiw, happy to answer any questions you have about #guix
-
@gozes I found it while trying out #nixos and found that though at the time #guix was less polished and had (and still has) fewer packages, I found that its approach of using scheme instead of creating an entirely new language was preferred. I also found its command line tools much easier to use then nix.
One large benefit was that I was able to switch management of my dotfiles from #stow to guix (at the time guix home did not yet exist, but even then, it was still a pretty great experience).
-
@bitprophet I know. Truth is I use guix (https://guix.gnu.org/) and a variant of #stow (https://github.com/majorkingleo/xstow) for local builds on my #OpenSUSE daily drivers.

Going from Newscastle upon Tyne to #Edinburgh during our next summer holidays in #Scotland. Absolutely planning to stop over in #Stow to peruse the books at @WedaleBooks which I only know of because I discovered them on #Mastodon.
