I’ve just spent multiple hours working on a long-term side quest.

I have far too many drives installed in my gaming PC. I have a #rainmeter skin that gives me an at-a-glance visual of how much space is left on each drive.

As well as the numbers, there’s a small line graph under each drive, that provides a visual indicator of how full the drive is. I’d made a few modifications over the years, but last year I found a drive monitor skin that used a coloured bar graph depending on how full the drive was, from green to red.

I really liked the idea, but not the execution. I prefer the look of the skin I’m using. I ran the two side by side for months, after a brief failed attempt to understand how the “new” one worked, but today I decided I’d try again.

I eventually succeeded, however I’m not great at complex maths, the kind that scripting and coding require.

It’s why I’m not a dev.

Staring at a string of code, and willing myself to understand how the variables are interacting to produce a particular outcome, knowing that it’s just math, but that I can’t hold the numbers in my head long enough to see it clearly?

I ended up with a headache.

The final outcome seems to work, even though I’m not entirely sure that the math works.

My biggest problem was order of operations stuff, once I’d worked out where and what calculations needed to be made.

Partly because I wanted to *change* the way it worked. I wanted it to stay green until the drive is 50% full, *then* start changing the colour.

Having succeeded, I should feel a sense of achievement, but I don’t. I just feel frustrated that I got caught up on a side quest, and that were my brain better at maths, it wouldn’t have taken me so long.

I'm setting up a #Windows laptop, after my Windows VM borked my #QubesOS daily driver. I realized the only thing I miss about Windows is #Rainmeter. So the only thing I miss about Windows is the thing that makes it not look like Windows.

My quest to have the perfect (ha!) desktop continues; I've been looking into making Cinnamon desktop widgets ("Desklets").

Instead of having out of date documentation like KDE Plasma 6, there's just no documentation. 🤷

Maybe if I hit the lottery this week I'll quit my day job, reverse engineer these desktop widget systems, and write up to date docs and tutorials. 😛

Rainmeter might be the Windows app I miss most, somehow.

Как помешаться на ровном месте на 2 месяца, Hubbitant edition.

Захотелось мне как-то красивостей на рабочем столе. Ресурсы пека всё-равно простаивают, чего бы не погонять виджетов.
Для винды самый популярный и трушный вариант - Rainmeter. Поставил его, ровно два месяца назад, быстренько погуглил скины и практически сразу нашёл тот, в который влюбился с первого взгляда - Sonder. Палитра, обои, виджеты, мне понравилось в нём абсолютно всё, конечно же я его скачал и поставил.

А дальше началось:
- У календаря в шрифте названия месяца не поддерживалась кириллица. Пришлось ковырять и встраивать другой шрифт
- Виджет погоды не работал целиком и полностью т.к. сервис погоды блокировал запросы из РФ. Сначала я попробовал взять погоду из HomeAssistant - получилось, но данные были недостаточны. Потом я Начал делать свой виджет под яндекс.погоду, попутно осваивая Inkscape чтобы нарисовать значки состояния для Яндекс и в стиле оформления скина.
- Ковыряясь в Sonder, я обнаружил что он без спроса детектит геолокацию а также делает запрос в гугл-метрику.

Меня уже было не остановить. После календаря и виджета погоды я сделал свой вариант карты планеты т.к. на оригинальной терминатор состоял из 14 картинок и соответствовал реальности 14 дней в году. Я же сделал отрисовку в реальном времени на основе астрономических вычислений...

Каждый день в свободное время, вместо того чтобы погамать, например, или посмотреть сериал, я "гамал" в раинметер и Lua скрипты, Inkscape и Api сервисы. Отпустило меня только сейчас, когда я сделал, по большому счёту, упрощённую копию скина Sonder. Но отпустило ли? Ещё осталось куча идей, но и выгорание (слегка) тоже произошло. Хорошо что меня хватило довести дело до конца.

p.s. да, у меня два монитора. Часы, на том, где нет карты, просто для демонстрации. Я их там не использую.
