@mailbox_org #PGP ist leider zu kompliziert und und zu uneinheitlich umgesetzt. Geht mit #Thunderbird ganz gut, auf Android ist man von einem quasi ungepflegten #OpenKeyChain abhängig, auf iOS von unfreien Apps. Und vom Synchronisieren der Schlüssel über mehrere Geräte hinweg reden wir lieber gar nicht erst.

Mit #DeltaChat geht das deutlich bequemer, aber das würde ich eher gesondert betrachten.

Por lo visto las claves generadas por Proton añaden a los datos de identidad el correo sin respetar los guiones y los puntos del usuario (pero no del dominio) a las claves disponibles en su servidor.

Es decir, si mi dirección es "[email protected]" o "[email protected]", la clave PGP tendrá asociada "[email protected]". Y si el correo asociado a la llave pública y la del destinatario no coinciden, otros clientes PGP se negarán a usarla.

En otras palabras: generad vuestras *propias claves*. Proton sigue permitiendo subir a sus servidores claves autogeneradas btw.

Standard Mails sind genauso "sicher" wie Postkarten - jeder könnte mitlesen, vertrauliche Daten liegen *unter Umständen* offen auf fremden Servern ...
Das muss aber nicht so sein. Und wenn es nur darum geht zu erkennen, ob die Mail wirklich aus der Quelle kommt, die behauptet der Absender zu sein.

The last update of the "wonderful" mail program #k9mail is broken regarding communication with #openkeychain .
It states "can not connect".
No, a restart did not solve the problem

I didn't know that #OpenKeychain was unmaintained. The last release on #FDroid was in March 2024, and works just fine for now.

Are there any opensource, actively maintained apps to manage PGP/GPG keys on Android?

Es gibt einen ganz wunderbaren Passwortmanager, der ganz im Sinne der Unix-Philosophie entwickelt worden ist. Er verwendet keine eigene Kryptographie sondern verlässt sich hier auf GPG. Mit GPG lassen sich auch wunderbar Gruppenberechtigungen bauen und in Kombination mit Git hat man zudem ein wunderbares Synchronisations-Tool.

Ich mag Pass und verwende die Software gerne.

Allerdings ist die Nutzbarkeit für mich seit kurzem erheblich eingeschränkt, weil es keine gewartete Variante für das #Android -Ökosystem mehr gibt. Für Pass benötigt man zwei Apps und beide werden nicht mehr weiterentwickelt:

• Im Oktober haben die Maintainer von Android Password Store angekündigt, dass die Software nicht mehr weiterentwickelt wird. Im F-Droid-Store ist #APS schon nicht mehr zu finden.
• Zudem haben die Entwickler:innen von OpenKeychain haben ebenfalls angekündigt, dass sie das Projekt nicht mehr weiterentwickeln werden. Sie versprechen aber, das sie bei Bedarf neue Releases mit gefixten Sicherheitslücken bereitstellen werden. Wenn #OpenKeychain fällt, dann fällt auch GPG-Verschlüsselung auf Android-Devices generell weg 😟

Wenn ihr Nutzer:innen von Pass seid, was ist denn eure Lösung für das Android-Ökosystem? Über Tipps würde ich mich so richtig freuen!

Ну, що. @thunderbird на компі оновився до тієї версії, що підтримує синхронізацію з мобільним.
Я успішно синхронізував облікову, встановив #openkeychain (яку, до речі одразу радить #thunderbird), імпортував свої ключі.
Але, як бачите, не можу налаштувати end-to-end key.
Х.з., може пташка ще сира, чи ще чогось не вистачає 🤔

I've made numerous go's at adapting #PGP / #GPG for e-mail encryption, but I never really got something even close to a setup that wasn't needlessly complicated and bothersome. This time, I'm giving it another try, with #Thunderbird on the computer and #K9 and #OpenKeychain on #Android. If you're running PGP/GPG and want to help me test it, throw me a test mail on [email protected] - the public key should be on keys.openpgp.org - maybe I should upload it elsewhere too? Thanks! :-)

I'm testing alternatives to the Gmail app on #Android, and right now #K9 looks like worthy opponent. With the help of #OpenKeychain it supports #PGP / #GPG and the overall look is reasonable. There do appear to be a couple of shortcoming - folder management is a little off; I have a handful of Inbox subfolders, but these aren't shown under the Inbox - all folders must be traversed in the folder list. Bulk folder management is unfortunately not possible either, which means that setting folder priority can take a long time. I'm using #Thunderbird 's "keep folder structure when archiving" feature, which creates a lot of structure that I don't need to see every day. Also, it would appear that this "keep structure" feature doesn't exist for K-9.

Any other suggestions for Android mail clients that support PGP? Paid is fine, as long as it's worth it :-)

Is sb here in the loop on the current state of the #openkeychain app project?

#k9mail kept crashing on me when trying to forward e-mails.

After I forced my #FDroid to upgrade it from the latest stable version 6.603 to the latest beta 6.717, was able to forward mails again.

Now I'm wondering why this is not the recommended version. The changelog says the beta version fixes a crash caused by #OpenKeychain 6 which I am using as a #PGP provider.

@joel It might be worth mentioning that this is squarely on Openkeychain changing its API and suddenly returning an exception. The good news is that there is already a patch for #OpenKeychain. Also, #k9mail already got a patch in, protecting its lf from exceptions. So all is good and we can continue to be grateful for both projects!

@itsfoss I am happy with #PasswordStore which works in Android together with #OpenKeyChain based on #PGP / #GnuPG. You can sync with your computer either using git (i used a local git at my pc or alternatively with a folder in your mobile and then, using #syncthing). When I need to check in the pc I just use #emacs to open the gpg file. I am happy with this solution as it relies in gpg and it does need no private clouds. So far I only miss token integration (I should check whether is possible)

@thunderbird Better to take some more time to prepare a proper release – looking forward to it and kudos for keeping Thunderbird on @fdroidorg.

Still, any news about future encryption options, especially via #OpenPGP? Pretty much all #Android email clients rely on #Openkeychain to manage all your keys. Sadly it is still unmaintained and desperately needs a replacement or someone to take over development. Look at issues like this: https://github.com/open-keychain/open-keychain/issues/2856

why do websites rely on email they should also support making a account with #publicKeyCryptography

there are already tools for managing keys like #openkeychain for android. authentication can be done via challenge and response. anonymity can be handled with locally managed sub keys. or new unrelated keys. account recovery can be done by web of trust or make a back up account and mutually sigh your main one.

End to end encryption working nicely with #OpenKeychain and imported my #K9Mail settings without trouble.
