  3. I just signed up for the #nycmidnight #shortstory #competition, starting on January 23rd. I've done it before, and although I went out in the first round, I did get an honourable mention ☺️

    Anyone else participating?

  4. 1,400 increasingly unhinged words deep now, including a plot-justified bad haiku. Might as well just ship me that first place hat now.

  5. ... and of course despite _having_ a week, I choose to leave myself with a last day sprint.

  6. I have an absurd idea that almost certainly won't play. So obviously it's the only thing I'm even considering.

  7. Giving the short story challenge another try. I now have one week to write 2,500 words on:

    GENRE: Ghost Story
SUBJECT: Always a bridesmaid, never the bride
    CHARACTER: A developer

  9. The first round of the #NYCMidnight #ScreenwritingChallenge ended last weekend, congratulations all!
You have just over a month before the second round.

Keep reading past winners' work for inspiration. Today we share with you THE DANCER by Paul Searles.

"As a precocious orphan girl in a besieged city tries to hide her secret from an oppressive regime, an unexpected hero enters her life."

  10. The #screenwritingchallenge has officially begun! I'll be spending the next week assembling words in a hopefully appealing configuration.

If you, too, are a short story writer who would like to torture yourself by writing in a new and restrictive format, feel free to follow some of the breadcrumbs I've left here!

(But really, this is a lot of fun. Do consider trying it out!)

  11. I knew and accepted that movies often varied from the books they may be based upon. But today I learned that movies can even drift from the scripts written for them.

The writer me is appalled by this chaotic lack of respect for adhering to the written word.

The actor me is applauding the pure jazz of it all.

    Movies truly are magical.

  12. Two big discoveries in the screenwriting research today: the existence of the Internet Movie Script Database (IMSDb), and the rediscovery of John August's website.

I'm feeling like I might actually be able to rise to this screenwriting challenge!

  14. Alrighty, I've got a draft done for #NYCMidnight 's 259 micro fiction challenge (round 2!).

It needs to rest until tomorrow. Hopefully it's funny.

    I drew Comedy...

The wife did not think it was funny. Which was funny.

  15. Results are in for round one of #nycmidnight 250 word challenge.

This is my first time participating.

6th place. I made it in the top 10 for round 2 with my entry “The Exploding Princess Gig”

    Category: suspense/thriller
    Phrase: shutting the closet door

  18. In other news, I just signed up for NYC Midnight's 250 word challenge in Dec with a friend.

    We'll see how it goes.

  19. Today at @afterpastreview

    The Last Second Chance

I wrote this one back in 2014 or 2015 for the NYC Midnight Flash Fiction contest. It placed in the top 5 that round. Now, after several rejections and significant edits, she has found her acceptance.

    And another one today @afterpastreview

    Thicker Than Water

My first attempt at magic realism, due to the prompt at The Writing Battle this summer. Made it through a few rounds but fell short before hitting the semi-finals.
    Enjoy :)

  20. I think I’m going to crap out on my commitment to submit to a competition each month this year. It’s expensive and except for #NYCMidnight I get zero out of it. #writing #amwriting #writingcommunity

  21. @victor that was me! I had to write a spy story. I placed first in my group and advanced to the second round! But then I got knocked out in the second round with my horror story (which I thought was better, but the standards were higher, not surprisingly.) Taking part in these competitions has been a great learning experience and have helped me to make this a very creative year. I have stories submitted in a couple of other categories, so still writing away #NYCMidnight

  22. Can't believe it! I'm one of the 45 writers out of 6000 to make it to the finals in the NYCMidnight short story challenge!

Gotta clear my Saturday to somehow write, edit and polish a 1250 story in 24 hours...wish me luck!

    #AmWriting #WritingCommunity #NYCMidnight

  23. Welp, I made it out of the second round for #NYCMidnight's #shortstorychallenge2023, and I just submitted my 3rd round story last night.

The competition started with 5,956 people, and we're down to 215 for this round. FINGERS CROSSED. I'll find out the results in July.

  24. I have a very rough draft of the 100-word story (24 hour challenge, 5am-5am, makes sense in originating timezone) and it's just occurred to me that my ideas for both that and the 3,000-word story centre around elderly people. #NYCMidnight #NYCMicrofictionChallenge #MicrofictionChallenge100 #AmWriting

  25. Polishing my 2nd round short story for #nycmidnight and I’ve realized I have the backbone for a middle-grades adventure. That’s THREE projects in hopper in search of an agent. #amwriting #writingcommunity #amwritingfantasy

  26. My first good writing news! Just found out I made it through to the next round in the #nycmidnight Short Story Challenge! #writingcommunity #amwriting

  27. I am really enjoying working on my lovesick-boatbuilder-ghost story for the #NYCMidnight short story challenge. #amwriting #writingcommunity

  28. @dmcgk I hear this! I’m combining genres in the hopes that one will act as a foil for the one I was actually assigned. I’m asking a lot of my 2500 words 😂 #ShortStoryChallenge2023 #NYCMidnight

  29. @tardisgrl actively trying to stay on the ‘creative interpretation’ side of disqualification while mashing my prompts into something workable!

    #NYCMidnight #ShortStoryChallenge2023

  30. My first prompt: a crime caper in a kindergarten featuring a proud mother…

So just your bog-standard Muppet Babies / Oceans 11 mashup.

  31. It’s round 2 of the #nycmidnight 250 word microfiction competition. I’ve until midnight tonight New York time to write a 250 word story which is a drama, has the action of losing a key in it, and contains the word ‘vest’ somewhere.
Not feeling too confident over here, but it’s a good exercise regardless of the outcome ☺️
    #writing

  32. I got through to round 2 of the #nycmidnight 250 word microfiction competition 🥳 very unexpected that.
Look! Here I am in at number 3 woo!
    #writing #FlashFiction

  33. Finished my 250-word #scifi story for #nycmidnight that includes a detail I found via some nerdy research probably none of the judges will get, but that’s how I roll.
