🛰️ Grey Noise
Chapter 1:
by A.W. Rayne
The first time Sarai heard the signal, it was buried beneath static... a whisper wrapped in frost.
She didn’t tell anyone.
Not because it wasn’t real.
Because it was too real.
She’d been scanning the outer bands of Vesta Relay Station, rerouting telemetry from a defunct weather drone.
Routine maintenance.
Dead air.
Then a pulse...
a rhythmic stammer, like breath caught on metal teeth.
Then it spoke.
Not in words.
Not exactly.
It felt like language.
Felt like meaning clawing its way out of a collapsing star.
A tone.
A code.
A cry.
And then
“receiver confirmed”
buzzed like burnt copper through her earpiece.
She yanked the headset off.
Her heart was hammering.
The relay room suddenly too quiet, too still.
There was nothing on the logs.
No interference.
No inbound signal.
Just Sarai.
And the feeling she’d been seen.
Seen through.
The way a telescope sees a flicker in the void and doesn’t blink.
She sat back down.
Replayed the buffer.
Nothing.
No voice.
No pulse.
No anomaly.
Just grey noise.
