Not doing too well with posting every day :(

I have noticed a fundamental disconnect between what I consider a good trip and what other people go for.
Me: is three days in Edinburgh enough time to see the highlights?
Travel company: see all of England and Edinburgh in three days!(I decided no. Maybe next time. But I did stop in between trains/planes to take some photos.)
This view strikes me as something from a book rather than a real place.

Stonehaven, Aberdeenshire.
Part of it. The centre/shops are off to the left a bit.

Aberdeen, the view on escaping from the ferry.
So next couple of days will be photos from the area. (And maybe some Roman stuff, not form the area. I just like looking at it.) -

Broch of Gurness, on the northern part of the main island of Orkney. Iron Age of course. The central tower was about three times its current height. It surrounded by a small village that was built later (possibly after the broch collapsed or been shortened).
It's forty minutes walk from the nearest bus stop. (I get on the bus and ask for a ticket to Evie? You're going to the broch, asks the bus driver. The second stop is closer and less traffic, he says. He'll drop me at the second stop.) But it doesn't feel like forty minutes and way worth it.

A last photo from Shetland, near Jarlshof, where you can visit all eras from Neolithic through to the 17th century all at once
-
Lerwick, the largest/main town of Shetland. Population abut 7000 and, at this time, nearly as many tourists I'm sure.
Fascinating town, lots explore, interesting little shops and one of the better museums I've visited.

A thread of photos from Unst, Shetland, and then I will move south.
Unst is the northernmost island of Shetland. I don't think there's any thing north of it but ocean (and ice). There are lands at a higher latitude but they're off to the sides. If head off in the direction of this view, you should hit Norway (where the nearest big city is).
It's very picturesque and the people are very friendly. Everyone you meet is your new best friends (although you won't meet many, as there's only about 600 living there).

Bay and rock, Haroldswick, Unst, Shetland. Definitely a rock.
