For #TravelThursday here's the Broch of Clickimin near Lerwick on Shetland which we looked around in 2024. It can be dated to at least the early Iron Age although its actual function, like all brochs, is not clear. Farmsteads, status symbols, and fortifications all have supporters but also those who disagree. Archaeologists, eh? What are they like?

A de-registered from #Lerwick #Dental Practice patient has complained of being left in “tremendous pain” with with #toothache – with no offer of treatment.

The patient was among the 2,000 who were told they were being de-registered by early next year.

A further 4,000 patients are also at risk of de-registration.

Auf #Shetland wird das Dieselkraftwerk in #Lerwick voraussichtlich ab 2025 nur noch bei Netzproblemen eingesetzt. Dieses erzeugt derzeit etwa die Hälfte des Stroms auf Shetland.
Grund ist der Bau der Viking Wind Farm und das dafür gebaute #HGÜ Seekabel zum schottischen Festland, die die Stromversorgung dann regulär übernehmen. Eine Batterie hilft, bis das Kraftwerk eingesprungen ist.

For #SchiffsSamstag here's Regal Princess from #Lerwick in #Scotland last month. We had been booked on a boat trip with a local company to go and see some of the nearby islands and look for birds in the sea cliffs but the night before arriving we had an email to tell us that the boat had developed a fault so our trip had to be cancelled. A lucky event for us as we then arrived to thick fog.

Lerwick, the largest/main town of Shetland. Population abut 7000 and, at this time, nearly as many tourists I'm sure.

Fascinating town, lots explore, interesting little shops and one of the better museums I've visited.

The perils of booking trips way in advance is that sometimes things change, and this morning we've received the dreaded "Itinerary Change" email so our planned visit to the Orkneys and our booked trip to Skara Brae in May have been scrubbed in favour of Lerwick on Shetland. Very disappointing, but it happens. So now we've got to work out what we can see and do in a day on Shetland from Lerwick as a start/end point.
