A view from the water. We had to be in Dunbar for lunchtime (less said the better) but with 90 minutes to spare we got a swim in at Cove harbour - with a ball. And on the way back managed a short tun over and round Edin’s Hall Broch

So not all bad, a swim, a run and a Broch

An unusual example of a lowland broch. The elusive Tappoch (or Torwood) Broch is located near Denny in central Scotland, concealed within a dense (though now partly cleared) forest. More pics and info: https://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/denny/tappochbroch/index.html

For #TravelThursday here's the Broch of Clickimin near Lerwick on Shetland which we looked around in 2024. It can be dated to at least the early Iron Age although its actual function, like all brochs, is not clear. Farmsteads, status symbols, and fortifications all have supporters but also those who disagree. Archaeologists, eh? What are they like?

What do Pictish stones, a Lego broch, and a nuclear reactor control room have in common? They all live in a wonderfully eclectic museum in #Thurso.
The North Coast Visitor Centre explores all things #Caithness, from fossils to contemporary art.

Dun Beag is one of the best preserved brochs and a good example of a broch tower.
Brochs only appear in Scotland. They are dry stone structures formed of two concentric walls with a narrow entrance passage. Stone stairs ran between the walls to provide access, perhaps to upper floors, and the top.
Scotland’s brochs were built in the Iron Age, first emerging about 2,300 years ago. Their use continued until the middle of the first millennium CE.

The Broch of Gurness, the wonderfully evocative remains of an Iron Age broch and village overlooking Eynhallow Sound on Orkney's West Mainland. It was built as a planned settlement some time before 200BC. The site was excavated in 1929. More pics and info: https://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/westmainland/brochofgurness/index.html
