  1. As multiple wildfires burn out of control across BC, former NDP MPs & MLAs, Indigenous leaders and community leaders have written an open letter to David Eby and the BC NDP caucus, calling for action on the climate crisis.

"Signing the letter was, first of all, an expression of disappointment that this government has retreated so wholly from its climate commitment (…). Secondly, it’s an expression of hope that they’ll do the right thing and recommit to the climate program and address climate change."

"I can’t think of a less fair future, a less equal future, than one in which runaway climate change is allowed to continue."

  2. "Cities across north-eastern Canada and the US are continuing to suffer from intense smoke brought on by hundreds of wildfires burning across Canada."

"There are 955 wildfires actively burning across Canada - nearly 200 of those in Ontario - according to the latest numbers".

"Many of the wildfires remain out of control, forcing evacuations and destroying homes and infrastructure."

We can't afford any more pipelines from Mark Carney, Danielle Smith or Doug Ford.

  3. "The science is clear: to avert the worst impacts of climate change and preserve a liveable planet, global warming needs to be limited as much as possible and as a matter of urgency."

"Every fraction of a degree of warming matters. With every additional increment of global warming, changes in extremes and risks become larger."

It is crucial we act to minimize the damage by "urgently and significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions and phasing out fossil fuels."

  4. Wildfire smoke attacks your lungs, heart and brain:

Harmful particulates in wildfire smoke travel deep into the lungs, slip into the bloodstream, and get into the brain directly through the nose. When toxins reach the brain, they can cause inflammation, lack of focus, and headache; long-term exposure leads to brain damage and cognitive decline.

  5. "The IPCC reports could not be clearer: if we want to hold global warming to 1.5C, launching new fossil fuel projects is completely off the table. It is all about damage control at this point(…). Governments are obliged to use every tool in their shed to stop major environmental harm."

  6. Harnessing solar power has saved Europe €20 billion between 1 March and 15 July by lowering demand for fossil fuel imports.

'Over the 137-day period, solar delivered average savings of €146 million per day. This is more than what France spends on defence each day.'

Meanwhile, #Canada burns, and Mark Carney is trying to drag us backwards and force more tarsands pipelines on us.

'The vast majority of wildfires are burning out of control.'

  9. EcoJustice: 'Tell your MP to stop fuelling wildfires'

Science shows that climate change — fuelled by burning coal, oil, and gas — is making wildfires bigger, hotter, and more frequent, creating what experts call “supercharged” wildfire seasons.

We need to rein in the destruction while we still can.

Failing to address climate change is costing us, it’s costing you — from rebuilding after climate disasters to higher insurance premiums for our homes to rising grocery prices due to supply chain disruptions.

Enough is enough. Elected officials must put people and the planet first.

  10. Smoke from more than 100 active wildfires in northern Ontario have made Toronto’s air quality the current worst in the world and caused yellow, smoky air in cities across the north-east US.

Environment Canada issued health warnings on Wednesday after the sky over country’s largest city turned a sickly yellow and was ranked the worst in the world according to IQAir, the Swiss technology company that racks global air quality.

The city is also suffering a heatwave that shattered a three-decade record after reaching 37.3C in the downtown core, with runways at its main international airport hitting 55C.

“Fires are part of a natural cycle, but the extreme temperatures we are experiencing across the county and the growing severity of weather events are indicators of climate change.”

Reminder: 'The overwhelming majority of the world’s people — between 80 and 89%, according to recent science — want governments to take stronger action. But that fact is not reflected in our news coverage, which helps explain why the 89% don’t know that they are the global majority.'

  12. 'Most of the UK media stories about the record-breaking heatwave that struck in June failed to mention the climate crisis, analysis has found.'

'Nearly 2,500 articles about the extreme heat – when temperatures topped 37C, a record for the time of year – appeared in the UK’s nine main national daily media publications. But nearly three-quarters of them – about 72% – left out any mention of global heating or the climate'.

  13. 'The UK is in the grip of a "firewave", as the summer’s extreme heat produces the ideal conditions for wildfires'

"This ongoing ‘firewave’ is the most widespread that the UK has seen. We’ve had lots of fires in certain regions before, but we’ve never seen fires burning right across the country like this."

  15. Now 136 of Japan’s news outlets have gone further, joining a public awareness project called “I am one of the 89% who want to stop global warming.”

Organized by the UN Information Center in Japan, the project aims “to make visible the voices of prominent figures and people from all walks of life who want to stop global warming, and to amplify them into a collective voice of society.”

  16. Inspired by Covering Climate Now’s “89% Project,” every television network and station in Japan this spring began a two-year program of airing public service commercials pointing out that 89% of people in Japan support climate action, “so people shouldn’t be afraid to talk about it.”

And talking about climate change is an essential first step towards doing something about it.

  17. Reminder: Mark Carney is trying to give himself the power to greenlight industrial projects like pipelines even if those projects would push species to extinction.

The deadline for public feedback has been extended to July 22.

"Canadians fought hard for these laws to protect people, water, wildlife, and future generations. The Carney government is now proposing to gut them or introduce powers to bypass them without credible justification or adequate consultation."

  20. Reminder: climate researchers have connected the deadliest type of disaster — heat waves — directly to specific fossil fuel companies and their products, including Shell, BP, ExxonMobil and Canadian companies like Suncor and Cenovus.

  22. "I can clearly say that LNG Canada is a huge polluter whose site emissions appeared to be equivalent to or exceed that of anything that I have witnessed to date"

"LNG is not clean, it is a dirty fossil fuel, and a lot of this harmful air pollution is unmonitored and unregulated. (…) Why isn’t there better air monitoring to keep these massive polluters accountable? If there’s not a problem, there should be nothing to hide."

  26. 'Wildfires in Otsuchi dredge up unwelcome memories of 2011'

On the ground, support units from various parts of Japan were working frantically to put out the sparks of glowing embers. But the slightest breeze would start them smoldering again, and burned acreage just kept growing.

Back in 2011, Otsuchi was hit by the tsunami of the Great East Japan Earthquake as well as the fire that ensued.

This past week must have felt to the residents as if they were reliving that harrowing memory.
