Its use of voice-as-instrument rather than actually writing lyrics for the chorus seems a bit unusual for the period to me...but I could be wrong. Still, it's in keeping with Debussy's style, as he was one of few composers who managed to translate the visual style of Impressionism to music. (Faure was good at that, too, but not always.)
