I had the opportunity to discuss the life and legacy of #PopeFrancis with the Critical Theorist and Catholic theologian, Dr. Rudolf J. Siebert. We discussed the way Francis directed the church towards the poor and those left in the ditch of history. His presence in the world will be sorely missed, but there is much hope for the #newpope, #Pope Leo XIV.

It's a 2000 year old religion which spread along with humanity all over the world. Why should nationalism be so important?

It seems to me that nationalism continues to hold us back from achieving the vision taught by Jesus. It's not a competition of some kind.

@cafechatnoir @sindarina @BobHorowitz I follow a few folks on Bluesky (via the Tapestry app; I don't have a login) and this sounds right to me:

Pope Leo XIV is still going to be terrible on every issue that the Church is currently terrible on. That isn't going to change.

The good news is that this isn't walking back the limited reforms Francis instituted. And it is likely to mean a Pope who speaks up in areas where the Church is good.
(Eg migration, asylum, etc.)

And it's a Pope who is unlikely to be an active ally of MAGA and related fascist movements.

The bad was 100% locked in from the start. The good wasn't. And in 2025 America, I'll take anything slowing the descent or better as a win.
