My first attempt to learn Python (in library school) was under Python 2, and it was beyond frustrating that the data I wanted to work with (Cyrillic) involved all kinds of elaborate workarounds to not get mangled from the start. I gave up for nearly a decade. #MultilingualDH

I love a good #MultilingualDH corpus!
Your university library may have a form (or you can send an email) to request cataloging open access online resources. Consider filling it out to help make non-English corpora more findable!

Great project by Han, Christina; Twining, Lyndsey; Hu, Jing; Chi, Yeong Won; Yoon, Jonghoon combining small data sets, knowledge graphs, semantic MediaWiki, APIs, and a well-designed interface in an exemplary implementation of sustainable infrastructures for under-resourced languages, arguing that
- usability and semantic rigour are not in tension
- depth is the payoff of small data set
- multilingualism has to be architectural and cannot be bolted on at a later stage(unfortunately this Zoom session prevented me from taking screenshots)
-
And this is why we need continued and concerted efforts to push for linguistic diversity and technology stacks supporting all human writing systems and languages: Kim Hyeon delivering the keynote for #DH2026 in Korea refers to classical Chinese concepts, but the Chinese signs are not to be found for proper display on the slides!

> Any code point may be represented as a hexadecimal escape sequence. The meaning of such a hexadecimal number is determined by ISO/IEC 10646. If the code point is in the Basic Multilingual Plane (U+0000 through U+FFFF), then it may be represented as a six-character sequence: a reverse solidus, followed by the lowercase letter u, followed by four hexadecimal digits that encode the code point

I have been invited to give a keynote (my first one!) at the Transkribus User Conference this September. I wanted to attend this conference for a long time, so being able to join in this role is a special honor to me. Hope to see many of you in Passau at the TUC! #digitalhumanities #dh #multilingualism #multilingualdh #textrecognition #transkribus

Interesting #MultilingualDH piece on what gets lost in translation in AI-generated podcasts.

I remember loving that this site existed, pointing students to it, and suggesting things (like the #MultilingualDH addition!) On the infrastructure side, there were clear, simple instructions on how to get started while I was still struggling to wrap my head around how Jekyll worked & liquid syntax.

Last week's assignment was to create a data set from your life, but Celine Heck took it a step further and embroidered it too! This is her caffeinated beverage intake for the week. Chinese was easier than Latin for embroidering the labels, a #MultilingualDH win on top of it all! #DHmakes

I had the pleasure to briefly discuss my work on utilising #Wikidata for sharing knowledge about cultural artefacts, exemplified by Arabic periodicals, at #MSUGlobalDH. Slides are available at http://tillgrallert.eu/slides/dh/2026-gdhs/.

🚨 Job Alert: We’re hiring! The information infrastructure project INF of @sfb1475 currently has two openings for #DigitalHumanities researchers (full time, 3,5 years). We build the central research infrastructure for a collaborative research center comprising researchers working on metaphors in religious texts and material culture from a wide range of humanities disciplines, and with a strong #multilingualDH focus.

I am absolutely losing it as I fill out the form to get this added to our library catalogue, and my closest options for topic from their controlled vocabulary are "American Literary Studies" and "British and Commonwealth Literary Studies". #MultilingualDH

An excellent thread if you're ready to break out of the monolingual world of English. You can also learn some great tricks we know in area studies, like how to get something out of a talk that's about something in a language you don't speak. Come join us! #MultilingualDH

@chpollin @internetarchive Cool! Amazing how well things seem to work despite the rather bad quality of the original print and despite the challenges of multi-column layouts. Which model did you use?
-
@chpollin probably a side-venue as the “recognition” depends on the models of choice, which in turn are part of the linguistic imperialism of our technology stack, but are you testing performance for non-Western languages and/or non-Latin scripts?

A small Friday-evening project came to fruition. Analysing data on the dimensions of Arabic periodicals from #Wikidata, a quick and simple plot allows for a number of observations: Firstly, newspapers and magazines are of different sizes and the former tend to be significantly larger than the latter. This bestows confidence on our data set. Misclassification is seemingly rare, particularly for magazines. Secondly, the size of magazines is quite stable at around 24cm with a slight tendency towards larger heights in the 1920s. Thirdly, newspapers are of a much less consistent size with the majority of observations falling into the mid-thirties.

Great #MultilingualDH food for thought, reflecting on global Englishes, the afterlives of British colonial education, and how that intersects with what writing is judged to be "human".

Today, I am getting a lot of "503 Service Unavailable" from @internetarchive while linking items to #Wikidata. Probably a good moment to think about #CriticalInfrastructure for #CulturalHeritage.
