  1. "#Ladino is a historical #language of the #Sephardic #Jews, an amalgam of 15th-century #Spanish and other Romance languages. Traditionally written in #Hebrew characters, it is also influenced by Hebrew in vocabulary and structure. It was spoken by the Jews of #Spain, who took it with them when they were expelled from the country.

Once spoken across a thriving #diaspora that stretched across Southern #Europe, the #Balkans, #NorthAfrica, #Turkey and the #MiddleEast, Ladino is now considered endangered. Most native speakers are older than 60 and live primarily in #Israel. Estimates suggest only a few tens of thousands remain. One estimate pegged the number of speakers at 60,000 in 1994, and the number has trended downward since then. Many Ladino speakers were killed in the #Holocaust, and survivors were uprooted and adopted other languages.

  2. I saw Nani Vazana in concert on Friday night at KPAC in Kirkwood, MO. Amazing singer 😄

Most of her songs were in Ladino but she also covered Sting's "Shape of My Heart" and did a jazz number.

She is touring the US and Canada for the next couple of months.

  4. I also wrote a #SPARQL query to see the linguistic composition of the periodical press until 1930 at all locations with titles published in languages of the Eastern Mediterranean: #Arabic, #Ottoman, #Armenian, #Coptic, #Greek, #Farsi, #Ladino, #Azerbaijani

As a map with layers for each language, because sometimes geographic distribution is interesting: query-chest.toolforge.org/redi

  5. Although he shows up in the census, music union directories etc., Philip didn't have much of a public profile and wasn't really mentioned in old newspapers that I could find aside from a few social mentions. But for some reason in the last few months of 1916 he advertised his musical services in La Boz del Pueblo, a #Ladino newspaper from New York. I'm trying to sort it out between my high school Spanish classes and my moderate command of Yiddish😲

  6. @AutonomiaPulga @ayoub I’m not sure I’m following. It’s assumed that Jewish immigrants to Palestine from Eastern Europe were not Zionists? The non Zionists Yiddish speakers went to North America. See the Bund, amongst others.

But regardless, one of the targets of this group in Palestine was the “national poet” Bialik. It started as a boy-scouts weekend activity, but somehow its been made to sound like an organized brown shirts and institutionalized fascism. That’s not what it was about.

One thing to remember though is that #Yiddish is not “the language of the Jewish people”. Eastern European Jews are not “the Jewish people”. It was the language spoken by Eastern European Jews in the same way #Ladino and #Haketia were spoken by Jews from Morocco to Serbia, not to mention Arabic and Judeo-Arabic (the language in the use in the documents found in the mentioned Cairo Geniza) and the closest of them all to Hebrew.

  7. I’m reading Ode to Salonika, edited by Renée Levine Melammed, which presents the komplas composed by Bouena Sarfatty in memory of her destroyed community of Salonika. After background chapters on pre-Shoah Salonika life in the twentieth century, I have finally reached the bilingual presentation of the poems themselves (Ladino and English on facing pages). I’m surprised by how much Ladino I can understand. Each poem is composed to the health of a community member, most of whom were murdered. #Bookstodon #Shoah #Ladino #Books #BookRec #History #Poetry #Mazeldon #AmReading

  8. Anyone feel like learning #Ladino?

During the COVID lockdowns, I decided to pick up the language and started studying online with Professor Bryan Kirschen. Those evenings on my back porch on Zoom were sanity savers for one, and fabulously stimulating for another.

Well, he's doing another Intro to Ladino course this summer, and it's convenient and online! I really can't say enough good things about this class - what are you waiting for?!

  10. Ladino on the Internet - Sepharad 4. By Carlos Yebra López. This #OpenAccess publication constitutes the first critical and systematic account written in English on the online revitalisation of #Ladino. doi.org/10.4324/9781003473664

  11. 🎉 Behold, the #open-source answer to ending linguistic ignorance: #LibreLingo. It's a bold experiment where you, yes YOU, can finally learn #Ladino, because that's totally what you've been dying for. 🚀 Just don't expect any fancy graphics or user-friendly interfaces—it's #community-driven, after all. 😏

  12. I saw delightful little eggplants and got them to make makdous (preserved eggplant dish). But then we got word that they are ready to start work on renovating the kitchen (some cabinet doors are missing because they fell off). Starting a multi-day eggplant processing project is probably a bad idea now which means I have to find a new use for all those eggplants. (To clarify, this is not a hardship). All of which is a long-winded excuse to share “Los Guisados de la Berenjena” 🎶

  22. A Jewish radio show in Spain has interviewed me about the Jewish literary and historical translations I've worked on, both as part of the Posen Library's huge team of freelance translators and on other projects.

Click below to hear me talking in Spanish for 15 minutes about Jewish culture and history and whether historical documents count as literature. Unfortunately, the phone connection wasn't great.

Most of us in #MedinatAmerica speak Standard American #Hebrish, which also includes quite a bit of vocabulary from #Yiddish, and also #Ladino, #Bukharian, and so forth.

But the hashtags were for anyone trying to find content like my post, even if not searching in Yiddish.
