Yesterday I cleaned the family room, and it’s clear I need to do that more often. Charlie, being a border collie, sheds enough to knit a second dog. Besties are worth it, though. I once read that happiness is being covered in dog hair, and I’m starting to believe it.

While cleaning, I finally got around to removing Ben’s bed. He passed more than six months ago, and the bed just sat there, waiting for me to be ready. We gifted it to the neighbors across the street—they have two small dogs who will put it to good use. It’s a pricey bed, with a foam‑core mattress and a tough, washable cover. Charlie has the same model, just in a different color. I slid his bed into Ben’s old spot of sixteen years, tucked under the old sofa table. Charlie is top dog now.

I’d probably have more to write about if I left the house once in a while. My car hasn’t left the garage in over three weeks. The last time I drove was to buy several cases of water from the supermarket. I say “the supermarket” because there’s only one—unless you count Walmart, which I refer to as “the mall.”

I’m not a prepper in the strictest sense, but I keep a few cases of bottled water in the garage for those times when a storm blows through and the taps go dry. It happens around here more often than I’d like, and if you wait for the news to warn you, it’s already too late. I also keep a few five‑gallon cans filled—not for drinking, but for the practical things, like making sure the toilets can still be used. Body functions don’t stop just because the water does.

Look who came to me at the pool wanting seeds💙

Left is a Eurasian Collared dove. Suggestions for the other 2 are either common #doves or Mourning doves. The coloration matches that of Mourning doves, but from what info I found, #MourningDoves are about the same size as #EurasianCollaredDoves 🤷‍♂️

My favorite Mourning Dove Thing is when they're eating under the feeder and are perpetually surprised when a seed falls on them.
Like yeah I get it the first few times, but sometimes they've been standing there for a few minutes, the tenth seed bounces off their wing, and they still look up to see if they're under attack

Morning Couple

These two mourning doves (Zenaida macroura), often come and sit on my back fence in the morning and watch. It's as if they are waiting for the right moment to look for breakfast. Unlike rock doves, mourning doves never feed at my bird feeders. They only forage on the ground around the feeders.

"Seeds make up 99 percent of a Mourning Dove’s diet, including cultivated grains and even peanuts, as well as wild grasses, weeds, herbs, and occasionally berries. They sometimes eat snails. Mourning Doves eat roughly 12 to 20 percent of their body weight per day, or 71 calories on average." - allaboutbirds.org

I spotted General hanging out on one of the awning struts this morning.
My other half spent a great deal of time and effort building trust with him last spring, so this OG isn't bothered much by our comings and goings. -- even when we're chasing the squirrels away from the feeder. 🙂

Seen from the gravel parking pad while waiting for taco at Mexican food cart: sundry bird social interactions. #HouseSparrow commotion among the picnic tables and low bushes, unconcerned about the hoomans, certainly emphatic and boisterous. Shrilling calls of a #CedarWaxwing flock in the high branches - ventriloquistic, high-pitched as an old modem, and no doubt also information-dense. Below them, four sleek #MourningDoves perched together in companionable silence.

Mourning Dove stops by each night around 5pm for dinner.
It sits on the old chair & waits for us to put out a dish of seed. Then the dove jumps to the arm and flies over to the filled dish to dine.

One question remains. Did we train the mourning dove or did the mourning dove train us? 🤔
