Given the growing awareness of the Digital Coup and the intolerable threats by authoritarian tech, we are hosting a series of community sessions about how we can organise tech differently, in favour of public values, with cooperation and commoning as its foundations.
As you may know, several European governments have set up the EDIC for Digital Commons, a kind of a cooperative between member states, with a mission to “pool resources across member states to reduce technological dependency”.
Under its umbrella they are working together to develop collaborative workspaces for government agencies and public institutions, building on the best open source web applications, and developing new ones, integrating and improving them. Most notably #LaSuite by DINUM @numerique_gouv, #OpenDesk by @zendis and #MijnBureau by the Dutch @minbzk

Gemeenten verkennen autonome digitale werkomgeving
4 gemeenten en de VNG zetten een concrete stap richting meer digitale autonomie binnen de publieke sector. Zij werken mee aan een pilot om een Linux-gebaseerde werkplek en de samenwerkomgeving MijnBureau in de praktijk te toetsen. Dit doen zij onder de vlag van de NDS, in samenwerking met het ministerie van BZK en SSC-ICT.
Gemeenten ’s-Hertogenbosch, Zaanstad, Ede en Amsterdam gaan op kleine schaal experimenteren met een Linux-gebaseerde laptop in combinatie met MijnBureau. Hierop draait de Digitale Autonome Werkplek Overheid (DAWO), ontwikkeld door SSC-ICT.
Tegelijkertijd ontwikkelt BZK MijnBureau. Dat is een open source samenwerkomgeving waarin componenten samenkomen uit onder andere het Franse La Suite, het Duitse OpenDesk en Nextcloud. Samen vormen deze oplossingen een stap richting een toekomstbestendige, Europees ontwikkelde digitale werkomgeving.
Praktijkervaring versnelt doorontwikkeling
De komende maanden experimenteren de 4 gemeenten met een eerste versie van de autonome digitale werkomgeving. De pilot loopt tot eind 2026 en richt zich op het verzamelen van gebruikerservaringen en verbeterpunten, en het versterken van de integratie met bestaande systemen.
Daarnaast moet duidelijk worden welke groepen gemeentemedewerkers als eerste gebruik kunnen maken van Mijn Bureau in een productieomgeving. De inzichten en ervaringen uit de pilot helpen bij het doorontwikkelen van zowel DAWO als MijnBureau richting een stabiele en breed inzetbare oplossing.

We hit a huge milestone yesterday at the iBestuur conference 🔥 We showed the progress on #MijnBureau (opensource gov office suite) and #DAWO (Digitally Autonomous Workspace Gov).
MijnBureau is an initiative by @BZKopensource which promotes #opensource alternatives to big tech. DAWO handles underlying components, such as Linux desktops & phones. This is an #EDIC collaboration 🇪🇺

We're hosting our German #OpenDesk and French #LaSuite colleagues at the Dutch Ministry of Interior today to exchange experiences with our #MijnBureau team 🇩🇪🇫🇷
This is in preparation of the official European Digital Infrastructure Consortium (EDIC) launch tomorrow in The Hague. 🍾
The #EDIC will be a consortium of several EU member states to fund, support and build more #opensource EU alternatives together, like the sovereign workspaces replacing Microsoft.

Currently listening to a talk by large consultancy Centric about their #opensource sovereign workspace - basically the commercial version of #MijnBureau, #LaSuite and #OpenDesk.
Strongly mixed feelings. Like yeah consultancies have a role, but (having worked for Big Consulting for years) I know that their motives are purely monetary.

It's so cool to see European ministers advocate for #digitalsovereignty 🔥
Currently on stage are Germany's and France's Ministers for Digital Affairs, talking about the necessity of funding EU alternatives. Later today our Dutch gov's CIO will talk about the EDIC, a consortium in which we build sovereign digital commons together (like #MijnBureau). The day ends with keynotes from French pres Macron and German Chancellor Merz.

You may think a digital world where we’re no longer dependent on Big Tech is unrealistic… but you don’t have to reinforce the convenient narrative that there are no alternatives. You don’t have to be bold, but don’t discourage the leaders, pioneers, and decision-makers who do want to value things like autonomy and ownership of their data with unnecessary fear or a sense of smallness.

Vasthouden aan Microsoft 365 is geen natuurwet - iBestuur
