Varnish, it's like MySQL, Gitea, ownCloud and OpenOffice?

Well we're all familiar with MariaDB, Forgejo, and LibreOffice, now one group that is likening the creation of those forks by the original development teams is also asking folks (for the sake of understanding) that #Vinyl-cache is the original, unbroken codebase that was once #Varnish, yet furthermore, is also akin to other software such as those others mentioned above both pre and post forking.

Obviously, this could be confusing. Which should you use? which is the original? which is better?

Honestly, this is a matter of philosophy, business, and other matters of choice; but not so much in substance - yet. These two code bases haven't had much time to diverge, but they are, and have been, for a bit now. Both are FOSS. Both (or at least one) claims to be the continuation of a two decades old code base. Here's what's important now, and how you might want to come to your own conclusions as to which one to choose moving forward.

#Sun_Microsystems manufactured some of the most admired and trusted enterprise server hardware platforms. They also created and maintained #Solaris (SunOS), and they scooped up the custodianship for what was once Star Office in the form of #OpenOffice. They also brought Monty's #MySQL into the fold, while VirtualBox was another free offering.

#Sun was acquired by the #Evil_EllisonCo, aka, #Oracle. Immediately, the company was dismantled. Servers rebranded, while the OpenOffice developer team mutinied under the tutelage of Ellison, and then departed forming "The Document Foundation (TDF) in the process - a fork, #LibreOffice resulted.

Monty Widenius, already soured on the state of MySQL's place at the table with Oracle created the fork, MariaDB (Slackware Linux was the first major Linux distro to include MariaDB as the default during installation of the OS).

MySQL had much use for Oracle but Not OpenOffice (aka OOo), and Ellison refused to give the name to the Document Foundation, so it languished in the Apache Incubator, where he had gifted it, for many years.

Another famous new name that is essentially the original team of creators and developers is #NextCloud, and yes, #ownCloud does still exist... somewhere, or so I'm told ;)

When the three people in charge of steering and the custodianship of Gitea Formed a couple of for profit companies and assigned all trade and service marks of the product to those companies, it caused a great stir within the FOSS community (because this was the de facto leading #FOSS version of a code forge especially appropriate to host FOSS projects). A new Fork, #Forgejo was birthed.

So in a nutshell, When the Varnish project bootstrapped a for profit corporation to operate under (even though at this time it's still FOSS), it likewise spawned a fork of itself, and like the others, the defecting developers created the name #Vinyl, and forked Varnish-cache so that it is Vinyl-cache that continues in the tradition of FOSS while it's expected that Varnish-cache will continue to diverge from the direction of the original code base and philosophy.

@markusr Stimmt, soll in #OwnCloud aber auch wieder eingebaut werden. Ich hab jetzt hier ne Installation von #OpenCloud zum Test laufen. Auf dem iPhone/iPad funktioniert das mit virtuellen Dateien ganz wunderbar. Auf dem Mac nutze ich derzeit MountainDuck zur Einbindung von OpenCloud. Das scheint auch gut zu laufen. Ich kopiere heute mal alle Daten aus der Nextcloud rüber und amche dann mal ne Woche OpenCloud-only. :)

Seit Wochen und Monaten spinnt meine #Nextcloud im Zusammenhang mit #VirtualFiles. Auf dem Mac wird mir eigentlich ständig angezeigt, dass es ein Problem gäbe – was allerdings nicht stimmt. Sowohl in stable wie auch in beta.

Eine echte Lösung scheint es nicht zu geben, zu dem Problem findet man zu Hauf Suchende im Netz.

Was ist eine gute Alternative, wenn ich tatsächlich vor allem Dateien hosten will, also das meist von Nextcloud eh nicht nutze? #OwnCloud?

Nextcloud okay, aber langsamster Kandidat. ownCloud und OpenCloud schenken sich zwar nicht viel, aber OpenCloud war dann doch ein spürbares Stück schneller.

@macandi Ich kann nur sagen man kommt sehr weit. Ich arbeite komplett auf eigenen Plattformen und realisiere das auch für Kunden. Installationen von Software mit #homebrew auf #macos Adressbücher und Kalender z.B. von #owncloud oder #nextcloud ebenso wie Cloudspeicher – kann ohne Installationen z.B. auch über @hetzner bezogen werden und ist so #dsgvo Konform und mit dem Standort in Deutschland beheimatet.
Einzig der Wille ist entscheidend – ich gehe an der Stelle sogar noch weiter, denn meine Installationen basieren fast ausschließlich auf #opensource Plattformen wie #ucs #proxmox #truenas #vaultwarden und #mediawiki trotz der Tatsache, daß ich meistens #apple Geräte als Frontend benutze.
Also ein ganz klares JA es geht… wenn man nur will.

Na svém #NAS serveru chci mít také náhradu Google Disku. Velký PHP moloch #Nextcloud jsem od začátku nechtěl. Po průzkumu různých možností jsem v dockeru rozjel @OpenCloud, což je poměrně nový fork #ownCloud Infinite Scale (oCIS). Je to napsané v Go a je to rychlé. Jen teda překlad do češtiny je zatím dost neúplný. #selfhosting #OpenCloud

Anyone else noticed that the latest #owncloud server image (10.16.1) disappeared from Docker Hub? Another supply chain attack in progress or just a mistake?

Mal schauen, ob das gut für einen Artikel ist:

1. Kamera-SD-Karte einstecken.
2. Realtime-Sync erkennt das und startet ein Skript, das aus den Exif-Daten Ordner anlegt und die Dateien auf SSD-Pfad kopiert.
3. Da dieser Pfad zu einem OwnCloud-Space auf meinem Homeserver gehört, werden die neuen Fotos dort aufgenommen.

Muss noch ein paar Tests machen, sieht aber soweit gut aus.

Hi all! My name is Jeff, and I'm #softwareDeveloper and #maker in the process of relocating to #NewZealand.

My journey through social media started with Bulletin Board Systems (#BBS) & #IRC, through LiveJournal, to Facebook, an enjoyable stint in G+, back to Facebook, and now Mastodon. Ironically I never really got into Twitter, which I understand Mastadon aims to replace.

In my career I've worked on incredibly interesting projects like full scale helicopter simulators, small drone (#sUAS) control systems, and signal jamming technologies. I've worked with #C++ , #CSharp, #Python, #LabView.

But what I'm most proud of has been my time volunteering for a local charity I helped found, #MakersLocal256. This #makerspace was the first in #Alabama, has been around for over 15 years, and has survived on a "pay what you can" system. Our goal was and is to make available tools and technologies to those who either can afford it better together, or simply don't have the space for something like a gigantic #laserCutter. I've learned and taught equipment there such as #3DPrinters, #soldering, #embedded projects, #IoT, #lathes, #welding, #leatherWorking, #HamRadio and #cyberSecurity.

I've served #ML256 as both their Treasurer using systems like #GnuCash, and as a #systemsAdministrator using technologies including #Proxmox, #VMWare, #Redmine, #Owncloud, #ZoneMinder

As a hobbyist I run my own #homelab including this instance of Mastadon, #Plex, #mqtt, #proxmoxBE

My other hobbies include #cooking, with a focus on #sousVide and #cajun food, collecting #puzzleBoxes .
I consume large amounts of #Sci-Fi television, #anime, and have a weakness for paranormal teenage drama series like #vampireDiaries and now some soul rotting show called #FateWinxSaga. They're just so awful I can't stop watching.

In my youth I attended a #boardingSchool called #ASMS before Dumbledore made them cool. We had a cheerleading team for our chess team, it was baller. Our headmaster was from #NewZealand, and we plan to catch up once we get settled in.

My wife of eight years and I met in college, and has been my best friend, travel companion, taste tester, and cheerleader. She's an amazing #cosplay artist from Tennessee who has crafted #yukatas #kimonos, outfits from #animes, and so much more.
Her Londo Mallari from #Babylon5 is still the highest rated post of all time in r/Babylon5.

As her handler I end up going to many of her competitions and events, our favorite being #DragonCon . As a reward for being her personal slave, I earn cosplay points, which I save up and cash in on requests. The most memorable is when I asked to be a #sandworm from #Dune. She built a 14 meter worm in the style of a Chinese dragon. It takes eight people to pilot, has been in three parades, two with Kevin J. Anderson leading our path. She carries the 16 kilogram head, with me as her second in line. It's been featured in #MakeMagazine and has been used for a movie premier at a local theatre.

Well, that's me :) I don't intend on writing posts this long going forward, and honestly this felt like writing a CV. But hell, if you're gunna do, do it up.

So schnell kann es bei proprietären Anbietern gehen, dass Versprechen gebrochen werden und man in der Datenkrake landet.
Besser gleich mit #foss einen vendor lock vermeiden. #owncloud und #nextcloud bei #hostsharing wären eine einfache Alternative.

Quand même foufou cette décision de #Owncloud de maintenir leur propre version de PHP7.4 pour ne pas passer à PHP8+.
Le process de migration vers #Nextcloud, même d'une version pas à jour depuis 3 ans a été longue mais très propre et sans aucun bug, et ça, c'est super.
On est encore en train de tester que tout ce qu'il faut est là mais normalement, on est pas mal du tout.

Anforderungen

- Nutzerverwaltung (2 handvoll) mit Gruppen
- Dateien mit Berechtigungen ablegen über Web API und Browser-UI (ja, mehr nicht, nein wirklich!)
- Wunsch-TCP Port mit eigenem SSL-Cert (nicht self-signed)
- idealerweise tgz auspacken, minimal konfigurieren, starten (kein docker o.ä.)

If you don't mind 100gb/5-user limit, these folks are €6.90 per month and they manage the nextcloud sysadmin aspect for you. Might be worth a punt for a couple of months if you're still in the experimentation phase. #Nextcloud (perhaps also #owncloud I'm unsure) has a super #FOSS app ecosystem.

Meine #ownCloud oCIS Instanz zum laufen zu kriegen ist aufwändiger als gedacht.

Das Teil ist ziemlich pingelig bei CORS, lässt einen damit aber allein im Regen stehen. Mein bisheriges Reverse Proxy Setup mit HAproxy auf der OPNsense ist dafür nicht gut gerüstet. Also erstmal auf SNI Routing umbauen, um den Traffic von Authentik da heraus zu filetieren zu einer neuen #BunkerWeb Instanz.
