В попытках описать современный мир с точки зрения технологий в голову приходят самые разные эпитеты: от умный и миниатюрный до многофункциональный и энергоэффективный. Но ничто так не изменило мир, как беспроводные технологии. Нивелирование необходимости в том, чтобы устройство было подключено к источнику питания или коммуникационному оборудованию, сделало не только множество устройств, но и сам образ жизни человека весьма мобильным. Беспроводной интернет стал одной из важнейших технологий наших дней, которой пользуются не только компьютеры и смартфоны, но даже бытовая техника. Однако возможности Wi-Fi, как и любой другой технологии, имеют свои ограничения, преодолеть которые помогает наука. Ученые из Общества оптики и фотоники (Вашингтон, США) разработали новый чип, позволяющий увеличить скорость Wi-Fi до невообразимых 360 Гбит/с. Из чего сделан новый чип, каков принцип его работы, и какими еще достоинствами он обладает? Ответы на эти вопросы мы найдем в докладе ученых.

Картинка: freepik.com Мы привыкли к тому, что технологическое использование света всё больше и больше находит применение в нашей цивилизации: оптические развязки электронных схем, оптические линии связи (в том числе между спутниками), даже прогнозирующийся переход на оптические схемы и оптические процессоры (в относительно недалёком будущем)… Но есть и ещё одна область использования света, которая будет, наверное, не так широко знакома широкой публике, но тем не менее любопытна сама по себе — назовём её условно «оптические линии ближнего радиуса».

Which is why #LiFi is being researched and why #esa and others literally do the closest they can do to fiberoptics in space: Actively-tracked optical links and bridges between satellites...In short: unless it's a constantly moving vehicle or vessel that has to operate far away from any permanent settlement or shores, there's hardly any need that justifies #SATCOM amidst the high cost, high latency and low bandwiths.

I remember reading about #LiFi around 2014 and am somewhat dismayed that it sounds like it may still be an up-and-coming technology for consumers. I hope it's not like fusion, which always seems to be 10 years away 😉
