1. Looks like we'll have another engineer in the family. Tonight our daughter will be inducted into the Order of the Engineer, and tomorrow will be her official graduation ceremony at the University of Kentucky.

2. And I also, with #Claude's help, created MACWatch to solve a huge multi-branch network problem. Utility camps out in my office, scans my entire SD/WAN and uses #SNMP off my #Cisco #Catalysts, tracks everything it's seen in #Sqlite DB, and that gives me a solid place to investigate what my coworkers have plugged into my network. Rogue AP? Not anymore! It tells me what switch, what port, the MAC, and the #OUI manufacturer based on the #IEEE database. No hiding, no lying, no problem!

3. @fivetonsflax @SystemsAppr @ricci The #IEEE #802.1aq rollup spec definition of a Two-Port MAC Relay #TPMR is really quite insidious and bothersome to follow. I consider it a litmus test for how much an LLM will actually #HALLUCINATE when faced with a human-written specification. Calling everything a switch... Danger, Will Robinson, special cases abount. #OpenBSD notably has its own software stub driver to model this class of network element.

4. "The FPGA earned the Milestone designation because it introduced iteration to semiconductor design. Engineers could redesign hardware repeatedly without fabricating a new chip, dramatically reducing development risk and enabling faster innovation at a time when semiconductor costs were rising rapidly."

5. Reviewing as a committee member: my inbox is filling up with Jon Doe declines to review #1234

Dear authors, congratulations that you submitted three half-assed papers from the rubble of your student projects, but please do not set your review settings to 0 so that we as committee have to guess if you really can't or do not want to bothered with reviews. I see plenty of young researchers, especially from China chipping in heavily. That is not a healthy reviewing process anymore

15. @technicaladept @ZachWeinersmith I helped write an #IEEE standard. (This is a traditional academic process - working group members volunteer their time and expertise to create the standard and the publisher profits.)

We looked into making it open access, on the premise of "It's a standard. More people will use it and it will be a net good for the world because things will be compatible, which is what we literally wrote the standard for!"

We were told that the IEEE Standards Association would charge the IEEE society whose working group created the standard tens of thousands of US dollars to open source it. There was no way we would have been able to get our society to approve the transfer that kind of money to another branch of the IEEE for one standard.

I don't know what the money the Standards Association gets from people buying standards (roughly $100/copy) goes to, but I can't imagine that the cost of the editorial staff plus the costs of maintaining the mailing lists, keeping up the archive, and providing software tools like WebEx and iMeetCentral to support collaboration comes close to that income.

❗Call for papers: SCP 2026❗
Current contributions in the field of usable #security and #privacy can be submitted to the #Conference on Sociotechnical Cybersecurity & Privacy (SCP2026). SCP is a new conference, formed by merging two well-established and successful venues in the area of sociotechnical, user-centric security and privacy: #EuroUSEC (European #Symposium on Usable Security) and #STAST (International Workshop on Socio-Technical Aspects in Security). The goal of SCP is to create a unified, high-quality forum that brings together researchers and practitioners working across computer security, privacy, human-computer interaction, and the social and behavioral sciences.
Papers must be registered by May 20, 2026, and submissions are accepted until May 25, 2026. Accepted papers will be published through #IEEE. SCP 2026 will take place September 2nd and 3rd, 2026 in Belval, Luxembourg.

18. And that’s a wrap for 2026 #IEEE #SoutheastCon in Huntsville, Alabama. On to next year in Daytona Beach, Florida.

22. And so it begins. Loading the bus to go to #IEEE #SoutheastCon in Huntsville, Alabama with the #UKY student branch. For a change, I’ll be representing the Lexington Section this year, so I won’t be able to hang out with the students all that much.

23. Oh god, it's midterm already. Just posted my exams. Timing is good this year, because students can take those while I'm en route to #IEEE #SoutheastCon in Huntsville, AL tomorrow, so we won't miss any class time.

24. In unserem nächsten #IEEE #EMCProfessionalTalk geht es in einem Vortrag von Andreas Barchanski (Dassault Systemes, SIMULIA) um die "Simulation of #ShieldingEffectiveness in the Virtual #ReverberationChamber".

34. The era of "notice and consent" is ending. 👋

The new IEEE #MyTerms standard defines a machine-readable, enforceable contract for personal privacy. It replaces the endless consent-banner friction & weak enforcement with true two-party agreements.

38. #COAR (@coar_repositories) is exactly right about what's wrong with the #ACS and #IEEE demands that their authors pay them a fee for the right to deposit their accepted author manuscripts (#AAMs) in #OpenAccess #repositories.
coar-repositories.org/news-upd

* The charges applied are completely arbitrary and not based on any real service provision (for example, IEEE applies a fee to authors who want to apply a CC-BY licence to their AAM; and ACM applies a fee for removing the embargo period). They are just another funding stream for publishers that are already making huge profits.
* Deposit fees disadvantage authors who do not have funding to pay
* These fees amount to #DoubleDipping since the final published version of the AAM is made available behind a paywall with no discount
* This practice prevents universities and research organisations from creating an accessible record of their scholarly output.

And COAR is exactly right about the solution: author #RightsRetention. When authors retain key rights, they don't need publisher permission to deposit their works in OA repositories -- or to use and reuse them in other important ways as well.

PS: See my similar argument on a related ACS move last year.
