Most of the people telling us what the USA *should be* are standing on stolen land.
Where are the indigenous people, the people brought here on slave ships, telling us what the USA should be?

Manhattan was acquired for goods worth about $24, but the Lenape likely didn’t see it as a land sale. Was this historic deal misunderstood from the beginning?

Before Tottenville had its name, the Lenni Lenape called this place Aquehonga Monocknong — sandy banks and spirited forest. Their matrilineal society was remarkably progressive: women elders could remove male leaders they deemed unfit. They lived communally, moved with the land's rhythms, and thrived on the abundant oysters of Raritan Bay.

Last year, I saved seeds from some acorn and butternut #squash some friends gave us from their #organic #farm and now the final sister of our Three Sisters #Garden has sprouted. As these squash plants grow, they will provide natural protection for our #sweet #corn and #pole #beans . This style of #gardening was used historically by the Lenni Lenape #Indigenous #Americans who still live here in #NewJersey near me as the Ramapough #Lenape #Nation #gardeningmastodon

Did you know?
The history of Tottenville begins as all history in the United States begins — with the indigenous people already living here. In Tottenville, that would be the Lenni Lenape.

" Lenape Village" The #Lenape were the first human inhabitants of the #Philadelphia region.
People arrive at a Lenape Village by dugout canoe, with bark houses in the background.
The Lenape or "Original People," West Philadelphia’s first natives. They were a nomadic people belonging to the Algonquian language family. Important tribes within this language group included the Ojibwa, Blackfoot, Shawnee, and Lenape. The Lenape were divided into three sub-tribes: the Minsi (People of the Stone Country) inhabited the northern part of Pennsylvania, the Unami (People Who Live Down-River) inhabited the central region of Pennsylvania, and the Unalachtigo (People Who Live by the Ocean) inhabited the southern area of #Pennsylvania .
The Lenape resided in bands along various rivers and creeks. They lived on hunting and growing foodstuffs and depended on the fertility of the land. Due to their heavy tillage of the land, the soils they farmed gradually lost their productivity. As a result, Lenape frequently relocated. Generally, an occupied area lost its usefulness in two decades' time. Thus, the natives constantly set up, abandoned, and resettled communities throughout Pennsylvania.
Archeological evidence indicates that the Lenape inhabited the area centuries before the Europeans arrived. They established various villages along the Schuylkill River and its tributaries. Recent excavations in West Philadelphia reveal evidence of settlements along the west bank of the Schuylkill River along today’s Civic Center Boulevard.4 In 2001, a team of archeologists excavated the area prior to the building of a parking garage. During the excavation, numerous prehistoric artifacts were found, providing evidence of a fairly large and stable indigenous community occupying the area during the late archaic and early woodland periods, six thousand years ago.

Mannahatta Project (Landscape ecology 🏞️)
The Mannahatta Project is a Wildlife Conservation Society research project in historical ecology led by landscape ecologist Eric W. Sanderson that principally ran for 10 years from 1999-2009, reconstructing the island at the point of first contact between the Dutch ship Halve Maen and the Lenape in 1...

This is probably a long shot, but if any #Mohican or #Lenape folks see this, I wanted to ask something about the river that flows into NYC from the north.
The original name for it would be the Mahicannittuk, right? Is it appropriate for me as a white person to call it that? It feels weird calling it after Henry Hudson, but I’m also aware that I’m still quite ignorant about the relevant history, and I don’t want to assume it’s appropriate for me to start using the traditional name for it.

I spent a good chunk of today's writing time looking into Munsee Delaware language for a novel. I'm kinda baffled at moment as generally words have better matched up against each other Unami and Munsee. And then comes the term for white. Ope in Unami. Waapii in Munsee. Kinda matters given the sacred Opeksipu in modern day Indiana. This shall take some untangling.
-
Let me recommend this if you want to learn how an traditional Indigenous works: write with it. I use a mix of Unami Lenape and English and having to learn how to compound nouns and use Lenape adjectives. And the sounds. This has been a massive learning process. Things are sticking in my process. And it feels like the words themselves are coming to life.

https://anabaptistworld.org/lenape-ask-pennsylvania-mennonites-for-land-to-bury-their-ancestors/
This is a very important story. I'm hoping the Mennonites in #Pennsylvania can make this happen because it is the right thing to do, but also because it is a small step towards the broader reparations that need to happen across Turtle Island.
Also, there is an #Oklahoma connection to this story, as the Lenape (Delaware) Tribe of Oklahoma is headquartered in Bartlesville (with other Lenape bands in Wisconsin and Ontario)

Currently reading up on 18th century #Quaker minister Joshua Evans of #Marlton #SouthJersey. He was an abolitionist, accompanying Woolman down to the Southern colonies to labor with slave-holding Friends there. But he was also a vegetarian, #plain dresser, supporter of a nearby #Lenape population, and all-around Spirit-led person. Here’s an article on his #WarTaxResistance. https://sniggle.net/TPL/index5.php?entry=12May08

Fleshing out some more of the Sipuwa (River) Essays project. Looking at another of the cemented over waterways of the region. Grand Coulee was a seasonal waterway that filtered and evenly distributed rain and melt water. It was paved over to make Giles Blvd. Kikeokàn Pahsaèk in Unami Lenape, this was a critical part of our ecosystem that settlers destroyed. And now we worry about flooding, habitat, and pollution all the time.
