Interesting, the Bodleian library created a #Python library that converts #TIFF or #JPEG source images to #JP2 #JPEG2000 (using a #Kakadu wrapper), and does various quality checks on the result:
https://github.com/bodleian/image-processing
Will definitely give this a try for an upcoming in-house TIFF to JP2 conversion pilot project!

The first stable release of #Jpylyzer 2.2 is out now!
Main new feature is the support for High Throughput #JPEG2000 (#HTJ2K), and its JPH file format.
Also lots of other fixes and improvements, as well as some API and output enhancements:
https://jpylyzer.openpreservation.org/2024/01/23/jpylyzer-2-2-release
-
Just a reminder for who missed this earlier: a few weeks ago we published a release candidate for #jpylyzer 2.2, which is available for testing.
This release adds support of High Throughput #JPEG2000 #HTJ2K and its associated file formats, various codestream validation/parsing improvements, some output enhancements (including reporting of warnings), and an improved Python API.
Details here:
https://jpylyzer.openpreservation.org/2023/11/07/jpylyzer-2-2-release-candidate
Please let us know any issues, so we can fix them for the stable release!

The release candidate for #Jpylyzer 2.2 is out now! This is a truly action-packed release. Among other things, it adds support for High Throughput #JPEG2000 #HTJ2K. More info here:
https://jpylyzer.openpreservation.org/2023/11/07/jpylyzer-2-2-release-candidate
-
High Throughput #JPEG2000 #HTJ2K files are still rare in the wild, but I added a few to the Jpylyzer test files repo:
https://github.com/openpreserve/jpylyzer-test-files
Additional test files are welcome!
-
For the adventurous #Jpylyzer users out there, I published a (strictly unofficial!) beta of version 2.2.0, which includes support for High Throughput #JPEG2000 #HTJ2K.
Install using:
pip install --pre jpylyzer
To validate a JPH file:
jpylyzer --format jph oj-ht-byte.jph > out-jph.xml
To validate a HTJ2K codestream:
jpylyzer --format jhc oj-ht-byte_causal.jhc > out-jhc.xml
Draft docs are here:
An "official" release candidate will follow later.

Spent some time looking into software support for High Throughput #JPEG2000 #HTJ2K.
The only open source software I could find that can write the JPH format is OpenHTJ2K:
https://github.com/osamu620/OpenHTJ2K
And below some observations on a few other encoders I looked into:
https://github.com/openpreserve/jpylyzer/issues/197#issue-1873560610
-
(Not so) random quote from the High Throughput #JPEG2000 (#HTJ2K) white paper:
"As open source software, of course, the implementation has not been optimized nearly to the same extent as full commercial offerings such as that of Kakadu."
🤷♂️ (noteworthy to mention here that the white paper's lead author is also the developer of Kakadu)
Link to full document:

#Digipres hivemind - I'm looking for some (ideally small) sample images in JPH (High Throughput #JPEG2000 #HTJ2K) format.
Currently I can only find one single example (here: https://github.com/uclouvain/openjpeg-data/tree/master/input/nonregression/htj2k).
Any suggestions are welcome. Or contribute directly to the Jpylyzer test files dataset using Github:

JPEG 2000 (+25)
I am still wrapping my head around #jpeg2000...
It looks like #Gimp 3 removed the exporting support for it...
I can still use #imagemagick to trigger the conversion from any source to jpeg2000 to PDF.
But fewer steps are better...

Google security researchers found vulnerabilities in the #Kakadu #JPEG2000 library, then used "Conditional Corruption" technique in server-side exploit that hijacks control flow and executes arbitrary code:

Hi #digipres colleagues interested in #digitization in #jpeg2000 !
My question: do you use compression ratio or PSNR to define the JP2 compression?
I don't know if it's useful to create a poll for that, but if you think so, I can do it...

I remember when shiny new JPEG 2000 was going to replace the legacy JPEG format... It didn't happen and on the web only Safari ever supported it https://caniuse.com/jpeg2000
... until now https://webkit.org/blog/15443/news-from-wwdc24-webkit-in-safari-18-beta/:
"WebKit for Safari 18 beta removes support for the JPEG2000 image format. Safari was the only browser to ever provide support."
It's pretty rare to remove support for a format on the web.

New bugfix release of #Jpylyzer is out now! #jpeg2000
Version 2.2.1 fixes a check on the number of tileparts, which got broken at some point.
It also fixes an "unknown error" that was reported in case of a missing or malformed Bits Per Component Box.

TIL: JPEG-2000 uses the same container than MPEG-4, which is basically the son of QuickTime. Which means when it is actually embedded inside a QuickTime stream, there seems to a magical 8 byte prefix, which needs to be stripped to get a valid JPEG-2000 file. Long story short, my QuickDraw viewer should now handle JPEG-2000 data embedded inside QuickTime containers.

I ported the plugins from #DosView to #DOjS, so the next release of #DOjS will contain #TIFF, Sun Raster and #Jpeg2000 loading/writing.
I also switched #JPEG libraries and #JPG saving will be possible, too.
I also added a more sophisticated way of detecting keypresses, so creating games with keyboard input will be easier.
