Can Ruby Read an X-Ray? Building a Medical Image Processor.
When I built ruby-libgd I included Sobel edge detection, Laplacian filter, Gaussian blur, and custom convolution as native C bindings. I knew those filters would be useful someday.
Turns out medical imaging is exactly that use case.
Full article with code and Jupyter notebook below.

In today's episode of "Let's Overcomplicate the Obvious," Sophie Wang presents JPEG compression as if it's the eighth wonder of the world 🌍. Spoiler alert: It's just squishing images until they're pixelated blobs 💾👾. File that under "No duh" and move on, shall we? 🚀

FairScan 1.15 and 1.16 improve automatic document detection and edge detection.
These updates make the automatic cropping more reliable across different kinds of documents.
I also wrote a short post about how FairScan turns a detected document into a clean quadrilateral, and why this step is trickier than it looks:

Oh boy, someone spent an entire weekend reinventing the wheel 🛞 just to find an "OK" color for an image background! 🎨 Because resizing an image to 1x1 pixel and getting mud was too avant-garde for their taste. But fear not, they heroically named their groundbreaking library "Okmain," because apparently "MediocreMain" was too on the nose. 😂

🎨 Ah, the pioneering effort of using random cubic Bézier #strokes to reconstruct images—because regular strokes are just too mainstream. 🤓 Apparently, the future of image processing involves throwing random lines on a canvas until something coherent emerges, kind of like a toddler's art project but with more "metal" and less sense. 🚀
