  1. Not me getting excited to write about the #Invertfest Anthology, and planning to add @[email protected] and @[email protected] as collaborators to the patreon post and realising the feature is still in beta roll out stage Y_Y

  2. My story “The Aria of the Painted Lady” is part of this anthology. Wrote a Folktale about the origin of Painted Lady butterfly (Vanessa cardui) with a inspiration from Dorian Gray. Also check the beautiful art @[email protected] made to go with it! #WritingCommunity #Invertfest #BookSky

  3. today I learned:

some cicadas have symbiotic gut fungus (yes, fungi, not bacteria) that make amino acides for them. These fungi are related to the infamous "zombie" cordyceps fungi.

some cicadas in N. America have gone extinct in recent times, some without having their songs recorded

The podcast arthropod did an interview with Alie Kratzer, author of the upcoming book _The Cicadas of North America_

  4. On the 31th and final day of #Crustmas my true love gave to me the fossil Rosagammarus minichiellus McMenamin et al 2013 from the Triassic Luning Formation in Nevada. This particular fossil has had an interesting path of reinterpretation. Buckle up!

  5. Panacanthocaris is the weirdest of the weird. It's spiny carapace is very distinctive. Work in press by myself and colleagues shows that the genus Iliella is actually a senior subjective synonym of genus Panacanthocaris. Iliella was described first by Tchernyshev (1940), and the carapace was illustrated upside down. Panacanthocaris was described second by Novojilov (1957), and the carapace was illustrated right-side up. Oops. #invertfest #invertefest

  6. Happy #feetfriday ! One of the most adorable things on the planet are lepidoptera prolegs, MANY insect tarsi and tarantula claws. Enjoy these prolegs from #atticusatlas moth larva!

  11. Yes, they can inhabit humans. For the brave, you can find a video of one inhabiting a human eye on the interwebs. I like to imagine that the pentastomids inhabiting dinosaurs would have been massive. Where is our #paleoart of that? #invertfest #invertefest

  12. Back to C. bousfieldi. The weird thing about this fossil amphipod is that it is BLIND. No eyes. I know, I have searched. They are not even evident in CT scans. While this is not unheard of in amphipods, it typically indicates a cave-dweller. What the hell, C. bousfieldi? What were you doing in Chiapas, Mexico during the Miocene?
I could go on, but I don't want to bore you. #invertfest #invertefest

  13. I found this strange #insect on the side of a tree this morning. I puzzled over what it was for a long time, and fortunately was rescued by the #iNaturalist algorithm to tell me that this is probably a Alsophila #moth, a genus in which females are flightless. #InvertFest #InverteFest

  14. @jopabinia My #Invertfest is completely separate from, and unaffiliated with that other #Invertefest which, coincidentally, is spelled wrong. I can see how you confused the two. 😜

  15. @jopabinia Thanks--with that addition, I think I have my final lineup through the 31st! Then I take a break. Cumacean-ophiles will be sadly disappointed, as will all of the copepodologists. #Crustmas #invertfest

  16. On the 27th day of #Crustmas my true love gave to me the fossil clam shrimp Eosestheria middendorfi (Jones, 1862). This clam shrimp is notably found in the so-called 'Feathered Dinosaur Beds' of northeastern China. Specifically, it is a major constituent of the 'Jehol Biota' from the Yixian Formation. It is not just the feathered dinosaurs that are exceptionally preserved. EVERYTHING is exceptionally preserved. #crustacea #arthropoda #china #cretaceous #invertfest

  18. Called downstairs by my enthusiast niece I find a funnel-weaving #spider celebrating #InvertFest.

  19. So, what crustacean did you want for #Crustmas but no one got for you? I need exciting ideas, folks! Otherwise the last several days of Crustmas are going to be all clam shrimp and kazacharthrans. #invertfest #crustacea

  20. On the 26th day of #Crustmas my true love gave to me the rhizocephalan Sacculina carcini Thompson, 1836. Which frankly, caused me to doubt the trueness of her love . . . You see S. carcini, and its rhizocephalan brethren are parasitic castrators of crabs. Not being content with being merely epizoans like other barnacles, they have evolved something far more sinister. #arthropoda #crustacea #cirripedia #invertfest

  25. On the 25th day of #Crustmas my true love gave to me a mantis shrimp, Odontodactylus scyllarus Linnaeus, 1758. This stomatopod crustacean is both beautiful and deadly. At the front end of O. scyllarus, it carries a superpowered, superfast biological hammer.
