🚨 it's Paguritta, one of the cutest hermit crabs in the world!!!! 😍😍😍 I saw these in the Kerama islands, which are part of Okinawa (ie, political Japan, but closer to Taiwan). Perhaps that region is their hotspot #Crustmas

The closest known relative of insects is WEIRD! Remipedes live in marine caves (you have to cave dive) and are venomous. Their names are fun: Godzillius & Morlockia. How did insects go from a common ancestor with these guys onto land? Here's one idea (but no fossils so we don't know)! #Crustmas 🧪🦑

🚨 Don't eat uncooked snake! Your eyes & lungs can be parasitized by pentastomids, which are a CRUSTACEAN. Adults lack so many features that they weren't believed to be arthropods at all until their DNA was sequenced (and sperm morphology, but that was not widely accepted). Yet, they are! #Crustmas 🧪

On the 31th and final day of #Crustmas my true love gave to me the fossil Rosagammarus minichiellus McMenamin et al 2013 from the Triassic Luning Formation in Nevada. This particular fossil has had an interesting path of reinterpretation. Buckle up!

Some might consider this a questionable addition to Crustmas, because until fairly recently, no one knew for certain whether or not pentastomids were crustaceans. On the 28th day of #Crustmas my true love gave to me the fossil talitrid amphipod Caecorchestia bousfieldi Hegna & Lazo-Wasem in Hegna et al 2020. Yes, I was somewhat involved in naming this one . . .

On the 27th day of #Crustmas my true love gave to me the fossil clam shrimp Eosestheria middendorfi (Jones, 1862). This clam shrimp is notably found in the so-called 'Feathered Dinosaur Beds' of northeastern China. Specifically, it is a major constituent of the 'Jehol Biota' from the Yixian Formation. It is not just the feathered dinosaurs that are exceptionally preserved. EVERYTHING is exceptionally preserved. #crustacea #arthropoda #china #cretaceous
