The house finch came to supervise.
Apparently the way to summon a house finch is to start sketching them badly and they will come to correct you.
He sang a lovely song for me. I'm pretty sure it was all cuss words but they were pretty cuss words.

A house finch gets too excited about seed
This house finch forgot what it was doing, realized it couldn’t eat anything with nesting material in its beak, and flies off.

The grownup finches have brought the Very Big Babies to the feeding station, where the babies eat some seeds and then go into the baby tremble: daddy daddy feeeeeed me! Daddy? Daddy? Foooooood!

That scarlet chest against the deep blue sky! 🪶 Watching this House Finch find the perfect lookout on a sunny morning. Such a cheerful and bold splash of color in the winter branches. 🐦✨

F is for...Finch Farmer! Join us for the #ArtABCs... where a lucky letter is chosen from the alphabet every two weeks or so until they're all gone. I have a strong suspicion 'G' might be next.
EDIT: I should probably attach the art. 🤣

Winter Backyard Birding
Black oil sunflower seeds transformed my backyard into a small avian metropolis. -
Gentle Gaze
Imagine how a person who loves fishing must feel if they can walk out their back door and cast a line. That’s how I feel about my backyard—but instead of fishing, I sit outside and watch and photograph the visitors. There are about ten or so species that are regulars this time of year. House Finches (Haemorhous mexicanus), like this little female whose gaze is locked on mine, stay around for most of the year.
Step into a world where even the smallest moments—like the glint in a bird's eye—tell their own story.

A northern cardinal tries to scare off a house finch
Only for two house finches to return a moment later.

A couple of red birds at the feeder
I cleared out a path on the deck to refill the feeder last night. Of course the first visitor of the morning was a squirrel, but by mid-morning the birds had returned including this house finch before being displaced by a northern cardinal.

Winter Assembly
I snapped this image this morning of one of my bird feeders. Cold weather drives birds to seek extra energy, and they flock to the feeders when it’s low. Clearly, I need to refill this one. But it’s chilly out there—and since I took the photo through the glass of my storm door while wearing gym shorts and a T-shirt, I’m not stepping outside just yet.

Two birds trying to share in the snow
A house finch backed in deep into the feeder to get that seed and faces off with a junco sparrow.

SQUAAAAAAAWK—Someone doesn’t like sharing
I think this is the northern cardinal squawking, but I am not entirely sure.

Birds in snow
A lot of activity at the bird feeder this morning.
There is not much seed remaining and its toward the back of the feeder below the snow that we got.

Crimson Crooner
One morning, years ago, I looked up into a tall tree at the forest’s edge and saw dozens of birds with red breasts. Most flew off, but one or two lingered. I wondered if they might be house finches, but they were too large. Turned out they were American robins. I’ll admit to a touch of disappointment—I’ve never seen a full flock of house finches. Still, here’s a male House Finch (Haemorhous mexicanus) I spotted around the same time.

Sunflower Adventure
While reviewing some underexposed house finch photos I took one spring, I came across a bird with unusually colored head feathers. It might be a young male who hasn’t yet developed the characteristic reddish plumage around the head and chest—or perhaps it’s one of the rarer yellow variants. I managed to capture a few shots of this curious finch, and this one stands out as the most intriguing.

Disorderly House Finch
This lively house finch (Haemorhous mexicanus) was caught red-handed scattering seeds at the bird feeder, turning snack time into a delightful mess.
