Winter Assembly
I snapped this image this morning of one of my bird feeders. Cold weather drives birds to seek extra energy, and they flock to the feeders when it’s low. Clearly, I need to refill this one. But it’s chilly out there—and since I took the photo through the glass of my storm door while wearing gym shorts and a T-shirt, I’m not stepping outside just yet.

Storm Door Dispatches
I’m about to drink a cup of coffee, then head out for a walk—just me and Charlie McGee.
Coffee and quiet in the morning: one of life’s remaining pleasures. I drink mine black and have noticed that as it cools, a bitter taste creeps in. Or maybe I should say a bitterer taste. I know the tricks to tame the bitterness, but I rarely take the time to use them. So it ends up being just plain black coffee. Lately, I’ve turned to dark roast—it’s a little smoother than medium, me thinks.
I’m not sure where Charlie is at this exact moment, but my guess is he’s stationed at the back storm door, keeping watch over the yard for the bad squirrels. They raid my birdfeeders, and one of Charlie’s self-appointed duties is to chase them off. It’s a task he takes on with extreme vigor.
The thing is, the squirrels know the storm door is a barrier. They know Charlie can’t get out unless I let him. So they taunt him—turning the backyard into their playground while he watches, pacing and growling. That is, until I show up and open the door. Then—uh oh—squirrels and birds scatter toward the fence and the forest. It’s routine, but it never gets old.
I said squirrels and birds, but truth be told, Charlie tolerates the birds. He even watches them with me when we’re out back. But when he goes charging across the yard, all critters—feathered or furred—know to clear the way.

Golden Foragers
You have to look closely at this image. There are American Goldfinches (Spinus tristis) and Chipping Sparrows (Spizella passerina) foraging on the ground. They are difficult to see among the blades of brown and green grasses. I think that's the point—their natural camouflage helps them survive in the wild. I took this photo yesterday morning, 21 February 2025. There were hundreds of small birds around.

Sparrows on a Gravel Road
I cropped this photo too far in, I wanted to show the reflection of the sparrow in the puddle on the road. That part looks pretty good, but the sparrows themselves are lacking detail. These are chipping sparrows (Spizella passerina) favorite subjects of mine.
I don't post all of the photos that I post here to my Pixels gallery, but I post the photos I like best. Some don't make the cut. I usually wait a couple of days and see how I feel about it then.

Sparrows
I'm in a bit of a rush this morning, we're going to the big city of Alexandria, Louisiana which is about 48 miles away. I have to go to a FEDEX or UPS store and the ones in Alex are the closest. Anyway, I just grabbed a photo and did a rush job. These are chipping sparrows (Spizella passerina), they flew north a few weeks ago.
You know, the photographs that I post here are not quite a vivid as the same photographs that I post at my pixel's gallery, because here, I reduce the size of the photos and usually make a slight reduction in the quality of the photos to make them easier to load.

I went ahead and pulled the trigger on buying a robotic vacuum cleaner. It arrived yesterday, it is a Roomba j7+. I'm still learning the ropes but have it cleaning the family room now. I ordered some third-party replacement parts off of Amazon because the cost of the Rooba parts was pretty high. The reviews indicated that the bags were just like the Roomba brand. I was mapping the house yesterday, Charlie just avoided it, but Ben gets curious about new things in the house, and I watched him follow it around for a few minutes. I have to say, it isn't very loud, it can run while I'm watching TV and not bother me at all. The only time it sounds like a conventional vacuum is when it empties into the bin.

When I was a kid in the early 60s, I had a Slinky. I never could get the darn thing to work like they showed in the commercials. For me at least, it turned out that the Slinky wasn't hours of fun. However, it was a life lesson, a few years later, in the 70s, when somebody was marketing Pet Rocks, I skipped on the opportunity to purchase a small rock with a painted face. hmmm ... I just checked, the opportunity is still there, Pet Rocks are still on sale ... Slinkys are too. Here is an idea, a spin on the whole pet rock deal ... what about Feral Rocks or just Wild Rocks that you can tame yourself. A rock in a box that you can paint yourself (paint sold separately).

Top Bunk Taken
I took this photo a few days ago, I noticed the two chipping sparrows (Spizella passerina), perched one atop the other and it reminded me of bunk beds in the Marines or the Army, they both had them and probably still do.
