  1. Adventures In Failure

It's been said the difference between a professional and an amateur in most fields like photography is the professional doesn't admit their mistakes. At this point in my career I'm not making the majority of my income from photography s

  2. A couple of weeks ago I shot IC434 - the Flame Nebula along with Barnard 33 - the Horsehead Nebula.

I added another 2.5 hours to that shot overnight, and the extra detail is amazing, even though the restacking rejected a lot of frames from both. In the end I got an extra hour of exposure.

The image is centred on Alnitak - one end of Orion's Belt. Off in the corner we have the middle of the belt, Alnilam.

To the right of Alnitak is NGC2024, and above and to the left is IC434 - The Flame Nebula, with the Horsehead Nebula on the right hand edge. In between the two nebulae, though, is a third one - NGC2023.

Also scattered around are three other tiny and/or faint nebulae - IC431, IC432 (both below NGC2024) and IC435 (to the right of NGC2023).

Lastly, in the top left quadrant we have Sigma Orionis.

So we have a lot going on, and it makes for a pretty composition (in my opinion).

Shot on a Dwarf3, 3hr 58 minutes, 60s@80, OIII/Ha filter. Post processed in Stellar Studio and Snapseed.

  3. "End of the Belt"

  4. One of the first computers was #WilliaminaFleming Born 1857 she became one of the most prominent astronomers of her time yet we do not know a lot about her. I discovered her work while researching female computers for an exhibition and fast forward I‘m transcribing her journals in preparation for a story! She discovered 310 stars, 10 novae & 52 nebulae, including the #horseheadnebula! This will be my biggest undertaking yet! #comic #graphicnovel #femalecomputers #herstory #geschichte #computer

  5. I remember seeing the Horsehead nebula in my parents’ encyclopedia as a kid. I was amazed at how such a thing could exist. And now technologyy has evolved so far, that I can take the same picture from my own backyard!
    Here it is accompanied by the Flame nebula in the lower left together with the star Allnitak, which is the left most star in Orion’s belt. #horsehead #B33 #NGC2023 #horseheadnebula #flamenebula #astronomy #astrophotography #deepsky #backyardastronomy #astroshots #astrophoto #Space #universe #galaxy #universetoday #nightsky #stars #galaxy #nightphotography #skywatcher #touptek #backyardastrophotography

  6. The Orion Nebula is probably well known to most people, it's so bright that it's visible to the naked eye. However, there's so much more going on in that region of space. Also visible in this image is De Mairan's Nebula, Running Man Nebula, Horsehead Nebula, Flame Nebula and Barnard's Loop

  7. The #HorseheadNebula, a #darknebula located in the constellation #Orion approximately 1,500 light-years away from Earth, is best observed during its annual culmination at astronomical midnight mid December.

  9. Horsehead and Flame Nebula

I have found that I am no longer able to complete a project in a single night, or even in several consecutive nights. As the end of the season is approaching, I have stopped working on my Horsehead Nebula and Flame Nebula project after only two hours of data and saved it to continue next year.

  10. #SkyWatch #Astrophotography The #FlameNebula is a small emission nebula about 900 to 1500 light years from us. The #HorseheadNebula is the small dark area amid deep red ionized hydrodren located about 1500 light years from us. Both are part of the rich molecular complex in the winter constellation Orion. The faint colors in the darker part of the sky hints at the potential to capture even more detail when I add to the 60 minutes of exposure that created this image. #StillLearning

  11. #SkyWatch #Astrophotography The #FlameNebula and #HorseheadNebula are star formation areas in the #Orion molecular cloud about 1300-1500 light years from Earth. I captured five 2 minute exposures Saturday night before the clouds rolled in. I stacked and processed them in SiriL and GIMP. I'm pretty happy with my post-processing in this image but I am clearly #StillLearning.
