  1. Had another clear, cool night. I was able to get the Orion Nebula (M-42) and the moon with my #Seestar S30 Pro. The nebula is from a 5 minute/10 second stack of images and the moon is a single shot. The moon was very bright and blotted out all but the brightest stars.

SPHEREx mapping of diffuse PAH and H II emission in the Galactic plane: arxiv.org/abs/2603.23620 -> "Since its launch in early 2025, the #SPHEREx space telescope has been conducting an all-sky near-infrared spectral survey from 0.75 to 5.0 microns. We produce a large-scale map of the 3.3-micron #PAH emission feature, which is bright and detectable throughout the Galactic plane, and find a strong correlation with the thermal dust radiance measured by Planck." (The image shows the #OrionNebula in special false colors explained in the ALT text.)

  7. Size does matter! On the left is the old ball head, which always made me wonder why the camera was shaking and I couldn't focus on a subject. On the right is the new one, and now I understand why. Now I managed to capture Orion in the frame – my first ever image of the #orionnebula

    - 29 minutes of exposure
    - My wife's Pentax K30 (€0)
    - 70-210mm f/3.5 lens (€20 from eBay)

    Aufnahmebrennweite 750 mm
    Weitere techn. Infos siehe Ausgangströt.

Ausarbeitung am 10.01.2026 mit PixInsight (+RC-Astro Plugins), RawTherapee, Gimp

  10. Orion nebula M42 and De Marian's Nebula M43

Total Integration time: 6 hours, Filter Dual-Narrowband.
Sub-Frames taken in several nights, starting with 28. dec 2025. Not "the best nights" due to the moon - I know 🙄.

As my actual focus lies on the horsehead nebula, the orion nebula was done in between (better than nothing). As it is much brighter and at least the important red channel (H-alpha) of the Dual-Narrowband Filter is little affected of the moonlight, I decided to take photos anyway because of the clear sky.

Also this is my first project done with PixInsight - have still to learn and try a lot.

    Technical Infos:
Telescope Skywatcher 200mm/1200mm (10" f/6). modified with 3D-printed secondary mirror holder with 3 spider vanes
    Coma corrector: TS-Optics TSGPU
Filter: Optolong L-extreme, Dual Narrowband (H-Alpha, OIII)
Camera: ToupTek ATR2600C, cooled color Astrocam, Sensor APS-C (Sony IMX571C)
    Mount: iOptron CEM70
Guiding: Guidescope TS-Optics 60/248 mm, ZWO ASI 662 MC
Control via Raspberry Pi (RaspiOS - Debian 13), Indi, KStars, PHD2
Image processing: PixInsight (+RC-Astro Plugins), RawTherapee, Gimp

  15. after a while - i finally came to a bit astronomy. work has filled up my life last months... A glimpse an Messier 42, the Great Orion Nebula. Seeing was cruel and i couldn't do more resolution then 2x2 binning. but i am happy with the result of 30 Minutes photon counting 😉

  16. 🌌 Tonight looks good at the Westport Observatory (12/17, opens 8PM). A few passing clouds, but nothing to kill the vibe. With the bright Moon out of the way, it’s deep-sky night—winter galaxies, star clusters, outer planets, and the showstopper Orion Nebula. Come see what’s out there. was-ct.org/programs/public-vie

  18. Home hides in a quiet corner of the #MilkyWay, a vast spiral galaxy 100,000 light-years wide with arms like luminous highways. #Earth rests in the #OrionArm, a modest spur between #Sagittarius and #Perseus, marked by the #OrionNebula and the #Pleiades cluster. There, about two-thirds from the galactic center, a yellow star glows—the #Sun. One among roughly 400 billion #stars, it shelters the only world we know, the fragile speck where every human story unfolds. #Science #Physics #Astrodon #Space

  19. 🚀🎨 Oh, look! Yet another tale of a tech enthusiast who thought a $200 tracker wasn't enough, so they over-engineered a telescope mount with harmonic drives and an #ESP32, just to be the Bob Ross of the Orion Nebula. Next up: building a particle accelerator to make better toast. 🥇🔧

Dann arbeitet man das Bild (vorläufig mal) aus, dann weiß man wieder warum. Warum der ganze Aufwand.

  23. Orion (or Nyingarn in here Nyoongar lands) is starting to rise at a reasonable hour, so I thought I'd take another look at this classic target.

This time I threw on the OIII/Ha filter, and it seems that there is not much going on in the OIII band, because the end result is just about pure Ha.

DwarfII, OIII/Ha dual-band filter, 240x15s@gain 80. Post processed in Snapseed and Google Photos.
