Feb. 14, 2026#Cuba’s emergency measures should be seen as crucial test for the #BRICS bloc of developing nations, according to #HelenYaffe, a Cuba expert and professor of #LatinAmerica political economy at the University of Glasgow.
“This is probably the most important test now for BRICS … If BRICS cannot protect, defend and rally around a member, then what is it worth?” Yaffe told CNBC.
Cuba acquired “partner country” status of the BRICS group in January last year, bolstering its ties with the likes of #Brazil, #Russia and #China. Indeed, each of these three countries have sought to offer support to Cuba in recent days.
“The Cuban government is not going to submit,” Yaffe said. “The fact is, [the #US is] going to keep squeezing and the Cubans are going to keep resisting and there’s going to be a lot of unnecessary suffering.”

Their remains were flown into #Havana, and honoured with a ceremony there before being carried along Boyeros Avenue—lined with mourners—to the Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces. People waited for hours to pay tribute to the fallen Cubans, despite the heavy rain which swept in, filing past the coffins in silence and sorrow.
Cuba Analysis co-host #HelenYaffe was there as the procession passed and spoke with attendees about why they had participated and what this moment means for them and for #Cuba.

A #USStateDepartment statement clarified that the sanction extends to “current and former” officials and the “immediate family of such persons.”
