UNITED NATIONS, NEW YORK CITY, July 7, 2026 — In a diplomatic offensive aimed at challenging the #US economic war against #Cuba, Cuba’s foreign minister #BrunoRodríguezParilla requested a session of the #UNGeneralAssembly to re-open debate on ending the US blockade of the island. US secretary of state #MarcoRubio actively and aggressively opposed the proposal. But an overwhelming majority of #UN member states approved Cuba’s request to hold the debate. 136 voted in favor, 9 against, and 30 abstained. A win for Cuba! Cuba’s Foreign Minister #BrunoRodríguez accused the U.S. State Department of carrying out “pressure, blackmail and threats” to derail a debate about the U.S. blockade at the #UnitedNations General Assembly on July 7.

According to Rodríguez, the #US State Department is pressuring governments to prevent the session from taking place. He also claimed that Washington is circulating documents urging countries not to support Cuba at the #UN.

In addition to the brutal #energy blockade, which exacerbates the genocidal policy of #embargo of the last six decades, there are the declarations by representatives of the #US government elite regarding intentions of #military aggression.

The material and human cost of this blockade is a disgrace borne by the government of the greatest empire of all time. It is an illegal and inhumane act, a violation of international law, condemned every year by almost all member states of the # UnitedNations and, as recent polls have confirmed, rejected by the majority of the people of the land of Lincoln.

NEW YORK CITY — About 225 delegates representing organizations across the US and Canada attended the conference “Cuba Under Siege: Strategies for Resistance and a United Response.” In welcoming delegates to the meeting, Ike Nahem of the NY-NJ Cuba Sí Coalition, said: “The conference is taking place at an ominous time. A time of imperialist war in the Mideast and intervention in our hemisphere, marked by the January 3 US attack on Venezuela and the kidnapping of the country’s president Nicolás Maduro and his wife Celia Flores, and the siege of #Cuba under the #US blockade of #petroleum to the country.” Nahem called on delegates to focus on actions that represent a united response to this qualitative turn of events in the world situation.

An alliance of progressive advocacy groups announced on Thursday their intention to organize a humanitarian aid flotilla – named the #NuestraAméricaFlotilla – to #Cuba next month amidst increased economic pressure on the island by the #US.

Major groups participating in the flotilla include #ProgressiveInternational, an international left-wing activist organization, and #CodePink, a female-led grassroots peace and social justice group.

The flotilla’s mission has been endorsed by a variety of leading international figures, such as Brazilian activist Thiago Ávila, member of Colombia’s Chamber of Representatives María Fernanda Carrascal and US Congresswoman #RashidaTlaib.

Prominent left-wing American streamer Hasan Piker has confirmed his participation in the project.

Cuba’s Top Diplomat: Rubio Serves Personal Agenda, Not U.S. Interests

At a press conference held in Havana, Cuba’s Foreign Minister #BrunoRodríguez presented the country’s annual report on the effects of the #US blockade (also known as the embargo) and criticized US Secretary of State #MarcoRubio, accusing him of pursuing a politically motivated personal agenda tied to corrupt interests in Florida.

According to the report, U.S. sanctions caused Cuba to suffer $7.5 billion in material damages and losses, a 49% increase compared to those of the previous year.
