Washington.- Estados Unidos aumentó la presión sobre Cuba con una nueva batería de sanciones que afectan a varios funcionarios de la isla, como la ministra de Comunicaciones, Mayra Arevich Marín, y el de Energía y Minas, Vicente de la O Levy.
Las nuevas sanciones del Departamento del Tesoro se dieron a conocer poco antes de que el próximo viernes, según la prensa estadounidense, el Departamento de Justicia presente una acusación formal contra el líder cubano Raúl Castro.
Además de los dos ministros, fueron incluidos a la lista de sancionados del Tesoro el presidente de la Asamblea Nacional de Cuba, Juan Esteban Lazo Hernández; el director de la Policía Nacional, Óscar Alejandro Callejas Valcarce, y Roberto Morales Ojeda, miembro del Buró Político del Comité Central del Partido Comunista de Cuba (PCC).
También fueron designadas la Dirección Nacional de Inteligencia, que se suma a otras entidades del Estado cubano sancionadas como el Ministerio del Interior o la Policía Nacional Revolucionaria.
La sanciones de la Oficina de Control de Activos Extranjeros del Tesoro estadounidense (OFAC) implican el bloqueo de todos los activos y bienes bajo jurisdicción estadounidense de las personas o entidades designadas, prohibiendo cualquier transacción comercial o financiera con ellas.
Díaz-Canel desdeña las sanciones de EU
El presidente de Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, desdeñó este lunes la decisión de Washington de sancionar a once altos cargos políticos y militares cubanos.
«En la dirección de nuestro partido, Estado, Gobierno y sus instituciones militares, nadie tiene activo o propiedad que proteger bajo jurisdicción estadounidense. El Gobierno de EE.UU. lo sabe de sobra, tanto es así que ni siquiera hay evidencia que presentar», escribió el presidente en redes sociales.
Díaz-Canel enmarcó la decisión en la campaña de presión de EE.UU. a Cuba para que opere reformas políticas y económicas en el país, que ha contado con medidas como el bloqueo petrolero y la Orden Ejecutiva 14404 del 1 de mayo que ampliaba las sanciones.
El presidente consideró que es «inmoral, ilegal y criminal» actuar de esta forma.
«El castigo colectivo al que están sometiendo al pueblo cubano es un acto de genocidio que debe ser condenado por organismos internacionales y encausar penalmente a sus promotores», aseguró el mandatario de la isla.
A su juicio, «la retórica anticubana del odio» busca «justificar la escalada» de una «guerra económica total» contra la isla. «Por eso sí seguiremos denunciando, de la manera más firme y enérgica, el cerco genocida que busca estrangular a nuestro pueblo», agregó.
EU apuesta por las sanciones para limitar a Cuba
Esta nueva ronda de sanciones llega en un momento de máxima tensión entre Washington y La Habana, marcado por el bloqueo energético que Estados Unidos ha impuesto a Cuba y por las reiteradas amenazas del presidente estadounidense, Donald Trump, de «tomar el control» de la isla.
Además, el Departamento de Justicia de EE.UU. tiene previsto presentar el próximo miércoles, ante un tribunal de Florida, una acusación formal contra Raúl Castro por el derribo en 1996 de avionetas de una organización del exilio cubano, cuando el hermano menor de Fidel Castro se desempeñaba como ministro de Defensa.
En medio de estas crecientes tensiones, el director de la CIA, John Ratcliffe, viajó la semana pasada a La Habana para mantener reuniones con altos funcionarios del Gobierno cubano.
El presidente de Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, subrayó este lunes que su país tiene «el derecho absoluto y legítimo a defenderse» después de informaciones de prensa que apuntan a que La Habana adquirió 300 drones militares de Rusia e Irán. –sn–
