  1. Both Hairy Woodpeckers and Downy Woodpeckers are common throughout North America. They are very similar in appearance at first glance, but there are clear distinctions in overall size, bill size, behavior and call. This is a Hairy Woodpecker with its longer bill, longer body and sharper call. The Hairy Woodpecker is about the size of a Sapsucker for comparison.

  12. Downy Woodpecker (Dryobates pubescens)

It was a dreary day in Annandale and on this visit, my nieces were outside planting tomatoes. I saw the Downy Woodpecker (Dryobates pubescens) in the trees and scampered to my car to grab my camera. This woodpecker is a frequent visitor to my backyard suet feeder but photographing the bird has been challenging as the bird hides in the thick of the juniper trees.

Downy Woodpecker are easily recognised by their black and white plumage, with a white belly, black wings dotted with white spots, [...]

  15. First, thought I heard a Downy Woodpecker behind vociferous crows. Then thought could be a Hairy. Then a robin, perched on a stump giving its teek call which is REMARKABLY like the call note of a #HairyWoodpecker. Finally the pair of Hairies took pity - sweetheart, idiot, here we are! Super close extended looks as they foraged on the stump and a massive tree bole. I don't see that every day! They do like that big timber.
Photos not up to snuff though..

  17. A Hairy Woodpecker. They've got pretty much the same look and colour scheme as their cousins the Downies (including the red head patch for males), but are quite a bit bigger. Also their beaks are proportionately bigger. If you see one of these guys and the beak is almost as long as the head, you got a Hairy -- Ottawa, Mud Lake, January 1

  19. FINALLY caught the local Downy Woodpecker at the feeder today. Makes IDing between the Downy and Hairy very clear. Check the difference in the beaks in the first two pics. The second two pics show the Hairy’s tail is almost the size of the entire Downy. 😆

  21. We've seen the #redheadedwoodpecker in the area, but today it came to the feeder. The #redbelliedwoodpeckers are coming to the feeder every few minutes and loading up their beaks, probably to feed their hungry chicks. The #hairywoodpecker has also been visiting frequently. #birds #birding #birdsofmastodon #nature #photography

  22. Many of our big birds — jays, mockingbirds, crows, hawks — love to sit on top of our telephone pole. The woodpeckers, OTOH, love _climbing_ the pole. They fly up about half way, grab on, and climb up, poking their heads over the top when they get there. And they look so insanely pleased when they do. Like, “hey, that was a terrific climb, you should try it yourself!”

  23. Just time for one quick snap before it gone, so not as sharp as yesterday's Pileated, but I believe this is a #DownyWoodpecker and not a #HairyWoodpecker
